‘Dragon Quest X’ 3DS Release Date for North America Still Under Consideration

A Dragon Quest X 3DS release date for North America is still under consideration from publisher Square Enix after announcing the Japanese release date. September 4 will see the release of the first major MMO on the Nintendo handheld.

The original Dragon Quest X released for the Nintendo Wii in August of 2012 with versions for the Wii U and PC releasing later. and Android port was released in December of 2013 but opted to use a streaming delivery system rather than using the phone’s internal processor to run the game. The 3DS version of the game, announced on the official Dragon Quest Xpage, will essentially be the same delivery system as its mobile counterparts, not unlike the Remote Play feature of Sony’s PlayStation Vita.

As a result of Dragon Quest X streaming onto the 3DS via the could, the game will have significantly better visuals that most 3DS games. The trade off is that the 3D functions of the 3DS and 3Ds XL will be turned off which 2DS owners will be unaffected. From

Unlike most MMO’s Dragon Quest X is split between 2 different view points. One is a traditional single player campaign and the other is the more familiar MMO set up where a race and gender along with appearance are determined by the player. A starting area is then assigned based on the character’s details.

The environment is open-world and include random enemies, quests and secrets as one might encounter any day while wandering Hydelin or Azeroth. Tasks or enemies can be defeated by up to four people in a group. Also, players can cross-play with gamers on other platforms, similar to Final Fantasy XI where PS2, Xbox 360 and PC players share the same worlds.

The differentiating factor, when compared to other subscription MMO’s, is that offline play is allowed for a set time of a few hours. Afterwords the game needs to be played online to access the new content as your progress as the game uses could storage for save files and other game data. No details are available yet how much of this will be intact for the 3DS version releasing September 4.

As reported by Siliconera, the game’s subscription rates will kick in after the 60 day trial period. The prices below are in the Japanese Yen with approximate US Dollar rates:

  • 3-day pass: 350 yen / $3.50
  • 10-day pass: 650 yen / $6.40
  • 30-day pass: 1,500 yen / $15.00

These prices are on top of the base purchase of 3,800 yen, or $37 USD.

Square Enix discussed a Dragon Quest X release date for North America during the last company’s financial results meeting, and while there is no official word, it seems that Asia still seems to be the market of choice for the Dragon Quest series.
