Brenda Song Moves Into Her Own, Shedding Child Actor Label

Brenda Song is best known for her work in the genre of kid-friendly television shows, but the 26-year-old actress has been slowly moving into her own and is ready for a post-child star career.

The actress known for her work on Disney’s The Suite Life series, has taken roles in a number of adult projects, including stints on Scandal, New Girl, and in the movie The Social Network.

Song has also expanded her work beyond show business. She has been involved in a number of charitable projects, including serving as a hostess for the “A World of Change” annual charity fashion show. She has also participated in projects for the YMCA and to encourage students to participate in mathematics.

Lately she has taken a keen interest in fashion. Earlier this month she reunited with New Girl’s Zooey Deschanel for the Marc By Marc Jacobs Fall/Winter 2014 Preview in Los Angeles.

Brenda Song has done it all quietly, avoiding the fast-paced lifestyle and media-hungry approach of some of her young counterparts.

“Besides Hollywood grand-openings and award shows, I try to stay away from the parties,” she said in 2005, when she was still 17. “It’s so easy to be swept away from that whole scene because it’s expected of you. I’ve never drank or smoked in my entire life, but I’ve seen 15-year-olds drinking and smoking and I just think that’s gross.”

Song added that she’s aware many young girls look up to her, and tries to live up to the expectations.

“Oh goodness, I hope I can set a good example,” she said. “If I can do it, anyone can. I’m living my dream every single day.”

But even if she tries to avoid the spotlight, the spotlight has found Brenda Song. As she grows her profile in Hollywood, photographers and the tabloids have taken a greater interest. Song has fueled this in part with some high-profile relationships with Joe Jonas and rapper Flo Rida, but other times is a victim of her success.
