Reddit Users Share What They Hate Most About Their Own Cultures

On Reddit, the r/AskReddit subreddit (in which users can pose questions, serious or silly and everything in between, to other users) is often a randomly illuminating place — and a post that is popular today concerning users’ home cultures is one example of the forum’s breadth.

In a thread titled “What do you hate most about your culture?” u/starlight__ received nearly 9,000 replies — and many Redditors give a unique perspective regarding the intimate aspects of their native country or culture.

Being a slightly America-centric site, threads with such an international appeal often provide some neat and interesting background as to what life is like in other places, even in a sort of mundane way we’d never consider.

One lengthy reply at the top comes from a Redditor from India, who explains:

“I’m Indian and we may be way too proud of our culture and some of us can be hateful to other cultures. I know tons of people who think we’re supreme and intelligent but in reality we’re not as smart as we think. I knew some people who would make snide comments about Bangladeshi, Pakistani and general snide commentary about the Chinese, Japanese, etc. They even hate white people thinking that they’re just show offs because their countries are far more developed.”

The user adds:

“Forget other cultures, we can’t even tolerate each other. North Indians hate South Indians and vice versa. There was an article today where some people killed a North East Indian (they look somewhat Asian) and threw his corpse in the sewer because of indifference… Of course, this does not apply to everyone. There’s over 1.25 billion of us out there. But this is the general stance. India has also been rated one of the least welcoming countries for tourists.”

Several other Redditors from India concurred, but other countries also weighed in on their own perceived failings. Another top-rated comment comes from a British Reddit user, who believes that an alcohol-soaked leisure culture reflects poorly on his fellow Brits. He explains:

“I live in the UK and I hate the binge drinking culture. I enjoy alcohol myself and I’m not saying that it should be banned or anything as drastic as that but I wish everyone had a bit more self-respect instead of the weekly display of drunk people with their bits hanging out, vomiting in the street, peeing in public – that sort of thing.”

One reply added:

“Irish and I feel the same way.”

There was some levity, however:

“Russian here, you guys just can’t handle your drink.”

An Italian expat reflected:

“Italians are too obsessed with image. I never realized until I got older and moved to America where money still means a lot but you don’t put items back on the shelf for not costing enough.”

And an American user lamented:

“As an American, the superiority complex we have over other countries just because we’re a global superpower. Somehow a lot of people think that this position entitles us to ignorance about the world at large. Our culture doesn’t know anything about other cultures, and I find that really sad.”
