‘Transformers’ Might Battle ‘G.I. Joe’ In Movie Crossover

Transformers: Age of Extinction dominated a weak 4th of July weekend box office and recent comments from producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura suggest the direction that at least one more movie could take. However, the comics have a history of crossing over with another Paramount Pictures produced franchise, G.I. Joe. Bonaventura hinted that there’s at least a possibility the battling robots could meet the military force in the future.

“I think later on that’s a possibility but I don’t think in the near future” Bonaventura told Total Film in a video interview. “It’s not something we talk about either. There’s a lot more story to be told in both cases.”

He added, “If at some moment we all think ‘You know what? It’s time to bring the two of them together’ we’ll do that, but I think they’re strong enough to exist on their own.”

Transformers: Age of Extinction served as a soft reboot of the series by introducing new leading human characters, new Transformers, and a new plotline. This story change should carry the series for at least two more movies, so it could be well into the next decade before we see a crossover with G.I. Joe.

The G.I. Joe franchise has been less successful than Transformers at the box office. The second movie, Retaliation, gave the series a soft reboot with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Bruce Willis joining returnees Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow, and Cobra Commander, among others.

If a Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover movie were ever to happen, it would likely require another reboot to both franchises.

In one comic crossover produced by Devil’s Due press and Image Comics, Cobra discovered the Transformers in the crashed Ark and attempted to adapt them into fighting vehicles for the terrorist voice. The Autobots and Decepticons eventually break free of Cobra’s control causing battle lines to be drawn with the Autobots teaming up with G.I. Joe and the Decepticons tenuously partnering with Cobra.

In another crossover line from Dreamwave Productions, the continuity was shifted to the beginning of World War II where Cobra discovered and woke the Decepticons. The two conquered most of Europe before G.I. Joe came across the Autobots and joined forces.

Transformers: Age of Extinction dropped to $36.4 million earned over the 4th of July weekend domestically, but has passed a staggering $400 million total internationally since release. The movie has earned more than $575.6 million worldwide in the two weeks since its release, all but guaranteeing additional films.
