Project Morpheus Games: Sony Claims They Are The ‘Next Frontier’

Project Morpheus games are the “next frontier,” according to Sony. The lead console developer for this generation is already planning ahead with a virtual reality device which could make gamers even more antisocial than ever.

Thankfully the virtual reality gaming peripheral appears to be much more thought out than Nintendo’s attempt a few years ago. Instead of an eye-straining display of red on black with a mounting stand, Project Morpheus is being planned to take on the Oculus Rift and as Sony’s own mainstream gaming peripheral. While the PlayStation 4 is still struggling to maintain the benchmark of 1080p 60fps, the VR headset will demand even higher resolution just to look realistic.

Sony’s VR headset could become the most ridiculed and time wasting idea Sony has had in years if they can’t surpass the visual level available in YouTube videos today.

Project Morpheus games are obviously Sony’s focus for the future, as CEO Andrew House stated:

“It’s definitely more than an experiment. We’ve made some commitments; we’re putting significant investment into the product.

“We do now think that we can get to this point of delivering a magical sense of presence – where your brain tricks you into thinking you’re actually in this place. We think there’s something there that could be really, really interesting for a next frontier of game development.”

Video games really are a form of escapism that only books can rival, and Sony is hoping that it will become mainstream enough to make them the new pioneer in gaming technology. While not the first to do virtual reality gaming on a serious level, Sony expects to be the most successful with it. Ignoring the laughably poor reputation earned by the Virtual Boy, Sony is instead competing with Oculus VR, hoping that gamers warm up to the possibility of playing their favorite games while wearing a headset.

Andrew House explained Sony’s view of the Oculus Rift and how Project Morpheus games could get gamers more excited about the VR headset:

“With Oculus we saw this groundswell of game development that didn’t necessarily have a monetizable or a business option, but [developers were] so passionate about this space that they were doing this essentially in their spare time. It struck that me that if there’s a variety of game developers showing interest in this space then it’s probably time to jump in and see if we can play a part and give them the tools they’re looking for.”

While the technology to make Project Morpheus games profitable is still a few years away, Sony is hoping to give developers the chance to practice for what they believe to be gaming’s “next frontier.”

Could Project Morpheus be Sony’s version of the Xbox One Kinect, or is Sony on to something groundbreaking?
