‘Deliver Us From Evil’ Off To A Slow Start At The Box Office

Deliver Us from Evil is having a difficult time possessing moviegoers this weekend.

It may seem odd to release a gory R-rated horror movie during the festive Fourth of July holiday, but that didn’t stop Screen Gems from shoving The Exorcism of Emily Rose director Scott Derrickson’s latest spookfest into theaters. Unfortunately, Deliver Us from Evil is getting trampled by the competition.

Starring Eric Bana and Edgar Ramirez, the film tells the story of a NYPD sergeant who teams up with a priest to battle the demonic forces that are wreaking havoc on the city. Deliver Us from Evil is loosely inspired by a true story, though it’s quite obvious that the filmmakers have taken some liberties with the source material.

Unfortunately for Derrickson and Screen Gems, it appears that moviegoers are getting a little tired of the director’s penchant for demons and possession. The movie only managed to scrape together approximately $2.6 million on Thursday. Since the film was reportedly assembled on a $20 million budget, Deliver Us from Evil probably won’t have a hard time breaking even before it’s exorcised from the big screen.

It would appear that Derrickson’s misery has plenty of company this weekend. Deliver Us from Evil isn’t the only new movie that’s failed to make an impact on the box office. Tammy, the latest comedy from Melissa McCarthy, generated around $5.5 million on Thursday, bringing its two-day total to $11.7 million. Although McCarthy is definitely a box office draw, the plethora of negative reviews clearly aren’t doing the film any favors.

The family friendly adventure flick Earth to Echo also had a bumpy arrival this week. Industry estimate put the movie’s Thursday total at around $2.6 million, which essentially what Deliver Us from Evil made on the same day. As you may already have guessed, none of these films have a chance to knock Michael Bay’s big-budget behemoth Transformers: Age of Extinction from the top spot.

According to the figures posted at Box Office Mojo, Transformers 4 has already earned $422 million worldwide. That number will only get bigger as the weekend wears on. Although the fourth installment of the series was completely shredded by critics, it doesn’t seem to matter much to moviegoers. When it comes to giant robots and enormous explosions, reviews are entirely pointless.

Are you surprised director Scott Derrickson’s Deliver Us from Evil and the rest of the new releases aren’t doing better at the box office?
