Van Der Sloot Gets Married… In Prison

Joran van der Sloot, the 26-year-old-Dutch born convicted murder and prime suspect in the 2005 Natalie Holloway disappearance, shocked the world Friday when he married his girlfriend in a simple Peruvian prison wedding-complete with guards, handcuffs, and prison bars.

Van der Sloot, who is currently serving a 28-year-sentence for killing Stephany Flores, a 21-year-old business student at a Lima casino, married his 24-year-old girlfriend Leidy Figueroa at a private ceremony in his Lima, Peru, prison, says CNN. John Barrera, Mayor of Ancón District, presided over the ceremony.

Van der Sloot ‘s attorney told reporters that he met his new bride while she was selling goods inside the prison.

“They became friends and spent a lot of time together in his cell,” Altez said earlier this year. “Unlike the United States, here in Peru, loved ones or relatives can see inmates inside their jails.”

According to The Huffington Post writer Franklin Briceno, van der Sloot donned a tailored suit and dress shoes sent by his mother. He also told his bride, who is seven months pregnant, that after he is released from prison, “I want to marry you again,” and she told him the same.

The new husband is expected to become a father in September, when Figureoa is due to give birth to their child together. However, his new life will not serve as an escape from his old one.

In 2011, van der Sloot confessed to killing Stephany Flores five years to the day after Holloway’s disappearance.

Hollway disappeared while on a high school trip to Aruba. The Alabama teen’s body was never found and no charges were filed against Van der Sloot.

According to CNN, once Joran van der Sloot is released from his Lima prison, he will be extradited to the U.S. to face extortion charges for in connection with the Nancy Hollaway case.
