Prince William Portrait Mocked And Bashed, Artist Defends His Work

A new Prince William portrait has been revealed, but it is not exactly earning a lot of praise. The painting was created by Dan Llywelyn Hall, who says that the work is titled Fatherhood. He notes that the Duke of Cambridge’s relatively new role as a dad is what inspired the work. Unfortunately, not everybody has high praise for the portrait, and that is putting it mildly.

According to The Huffington Post, the Prince William portrait is drawing some severe criticism. The most intense comments regarding the painting are, naturally, on Twitter. The portrait was revealed on July 2, and it is slated to be auctioned off on October 1. The proceeds from the royal painting, according to Today, will go to the Victoria Cross Trust and War Memorials Trust.

Despite the good intentions of the painting, which shows the Duke of Cambridge wearing a red poppy to mark the 100th anniversary of World War I, sadly has been described by many as “rubbish,” “bloody awful,” and even worse. It seems that both art critics and laypeople are finding the work to be a bit off the mark. Most would admit that they don’t necessarily see anything particularly reflective of William’s new role as father to Prince George, nor does the work capture the essence of what royal watchers love about him.

Dan Llyewelyn Hall previously created a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, and that wasn’t well-received either. At the time, Hall said that he “achieved everything I wanted to” with the piece. He added, “I’ve had a tremendous reception and I’m totally indifferent to the reception of people, I really couldn’t care.” What does he have to say about the reaction to his new Prince William portrait? It would seem he is saying more of the same.

Hall says that in regards to the Duke of Cambridge painting criticism, “I laughed along as I am entirely indifferent to opinion.” He shares that, “When a work is complete I discard it like a used condom.” Hall insists that he’s happy with how the Prince William portrait turned out and he is “pleased to let it go out to the world and make a life for itself.”

The painting certainly doesn’t capture much of what royal fans love most about the Duke of Cambridge, but the reveal is providing quite the opportunity for those online to poke some fun at it all. So far there doesn’t seem to be any word what William’s wife, Kate Middleton, thinks of the piece. Are people being too harsh regarding Hall’s work on the Prince William portrait, or is it really that awful?
