The best I can find is that the earth goes through many cycles of colder and warmer weather which may last many years, a century , 10's of centuries and they are always changing. Nothing is solid. It is my belief that the weather and the climates are Gods personal hobby and the one thing in nature which he has never delegated out to another. He is always in charge which tells me these cycles are in Gods hands and he will be sure they do what they are designed to do. Just as dooms day whacko's try to predict the end of the world, how the world is run and the weather God only knows what the seasons will bring. The idea of not messing with "mother nature" does not compute! The plan is in place and the weather man is GOD almighty who is always about the business of keeping things in order. The destructive power with Hurricane's or Outbreaks of tornado's Snow storms or Blizzards, a beautiful spring day or a sweet shower are always just as the plan makes necessary. If you look at the prolonged droughts, heat waves, extreme weather events, this is what has resulted in the highest concentration of carbon dioxide in known history.

In 650,000 years CO2 has never been as high as 380 parts per million, which it is now. The most recent Ice Age was 10,000 years ago. So how do you figure?

What is wrong with creating a cleaner earth? Let's audit the EPA and create an entity that will honestly work with companies to promote less waste and a more environmentally-positive power source? I recall just last year that scientist had said that we were no longer in a global warming but rather a cooling cycle. I think all this proves is that we really do not have enough knowledge about how the earths temperatures are controlled to make this call yet. I have not really seen it get worse in my life time. If you check we have been setting record lows all over the united states in the past year. Not only in the winter but also in the summer. I live in Phoenix and I am constantly seeing on the news that we are 2 o 3 degrees cooler than normal. How do we know what the long range of normal is if we do not have a large history of global temperatures? A hundred years of records is hardly enough to say the world is warming. Besides this haven't the ice caps been melting for years? If you think no, ask yourself how did we come out of the ice age that scientist say we had. I would guess it is because the planet got warmer. Now where were the co2 producing vehicles then? The planet weather patterns go in cycles. This can be proven by the last 100 yrs of records. Who is to say that there are not cycles within cycles. For example the earth rotates 360 degrees every day. It also is in orbit. This can be the same for weather. Most of the time is stays X way but every so often it starts to a new season. Maybe this does not make since to you and that is fine. Weather is not an exact science and no matter how much they want you to believe they have it all figured out they do not. If they did then they would be able to at the very least predict the weather correctly 100% of the time.

There have not been record lows this summer as you can see from Texas and Oklahoma having triple digit temperatures for more than a month. They have broken records recently. This is considered the hottest summer yet, actually a health emergency. If you guys are at 116 degrees and you are 2 or 3 degrees cooler I can't imagine what it's like normally. Your "facts" are based off of too many assumptions which turns them back to theory. First you cite that the CO2 concentrations are the highest since 650,000 years ago. Human records don't go back that far and therefore it's a false statement. Secondly, you automatically assume that higher levels of CO2 increases temperature which is also unproven. In a scientific environment (think test tube) there is no way to increase nor decrease temperature with increased or decreased CO2. Also, there is no way, unless you take a survey of them all, that you can say the majority of scientists agree on the global warming issue being a direct result of human action. I'll say it differently, the temperature of the earth is not changing because of the actions of man. Temperature fluctuation is a natural occurance. PLUS!!!! You even said in an earlier post that it's more of a climate change than temperature change so what is it Glenda? You can't have an increase AND a decrease in temperature because of CO2.

All of the "facts" that Gore trumpets are mere theory with regard to temperature change. The problem that Gore is having is that there is no way to scientifically prove that man has a direct affect on the temperature of the earth. That's like trying to scientifically prove or disprove the existance of God. TRUE science can neither support nor deny climate change being a direct result of human action or lack thereof. All TRUE science can do is continue to collect data and perform tests until undeniable evidence is attained. Since temperatures have been recorded by man(1880) there has only been a 0.6 degree difference. That's not even one degree difference!! The other thing you have to ask is what were the actual tempereatures before that? Technically we're still coming out of an ice age are we not? One thing I wanted to say is that they is it is both – climate and warming trend. How they tell going back so long? They take ice core samples and with toher scientific means they can tell how much CO2 was in the atmosphere, how hot it was, etc. They have found the Ice Ages going back much farthger tha n that in ice core samples.

Now they are able to tell much more with satellite data.

And if you say man can not change earth, the atmosphere would be changed on earth for thousands of years after a nuclear war. And there would probably be no humans after a big nuclear war. I'd say that would be a big change for the earth.

As little as 1 degree in temperature change can completely change the earth's climate. And how they measure CO2 gas emissions and global temperatures for thousands of years? They take ice core samples, for one things, fronm which they can tell exactly how much oxygen, carbon dioxide etc. there was going way back – they can even tell when, how long etc. Ice Ages occurred. I recommend looking up Dr. James Hansen, eminent astrophysicist and environmental scients. If you look read the table of contents, you'll get a good idea of why top scientists are so worried.

If yhou didn't get my previous comment, I meant Dr. James Hansen, top astro-physicist and environmental scientist. Look him up on Wikipedia and Look through the table of contents. It will explain the scientific methods they use to figure this all out. He studies the atmosphere of Venus, which is largely CO2, and from his extrapolations here, figures we're getting close to the climatory tipping point. The permafrost in Russia and the Arctic is melting, releasing methane gas, an added atmospheric greenhouse gas.

The fact is 100 yrs of records is not any reason to be alarmed. If we had maybe 500 or more years of records then we would have something to compare to. Just the fact that the last time it was this hot was nearly 100 years ago shows that weather moves in cycles. It was not greenhouse gases then nor an abundant amount of co2 from cars. Weather and temperatures just fluctuate and they always have. Let's look at some of the deserts of the world. When studied they find that at one time they had river flowing through them that are now dry. How did this happen? I bet it had nothing to do with co2 and greenhouse gases. The idea that we some how know what is going on is absurd. I can see what you are saying but when making such big claims you need enough evidence to back it up. We just do not have enough records to show that our pollution it the cause of the temperature rise. I do think it is a cause of lots of things just not the temp. I can see what they are trying to say but in the last 2 decades cars have made great strides in clean emissions. Just recently with the gas prices and more people driving more fuel efficient cars than ever before we would be producing less exhaust which in turn if going by what he wants us to believe would logically have to make it cooler. Interestingly enough it did not get cooler it got worse. Gas consumptions really has not changed much since the eighties and in the past few years actually dropped. There are more cars on the road but the average fuel economy is way higher. If it is the the cars doing this then why is it that with all of these factors that it has not changed anything? If you follow vehicle emissions you will find that 10 new trucks combined puts out cleaner exhaust than 1 car of the 80's. The math just doesn't add up. I can see why it mat seem like what they say but if it was as they say then it would change as vehicles started putting out less pollution. I can remember back in 1994 when I went on a 400 mile bicycle trip in mid june we had record braking temps of over 100 degrees for 8 days. Four years later we went the same week of the year but this time it was record breaking temperatures on the opposite side of the temperature gauge. If it was global warming it would have been the other way around. Not only this but it is amazing that it quite often takes 50 + years to brake extreme records. If a hundred years ago or 75 years ago it was really hot then and it was just the weather. What has changed?

I agree there's corruption in politics and both sides of the isle are funded in varying degrees by big money but the Tea Party in particular and Republicans are funded by big corporations and billionaires. Democrats are still trying to uphold people's rights, like the rights of the working class and the rights of the middle class. Republicans are following policies that little by little depress wages, get rid of union's rights, etc. Some of them, like Michelle Bachman, have asked the Federal Government for stimulus money for jobs in their own districts, while advocatin on their platform that they are against stimulus spending. Republicans want tax cuts for the top 1% of the wealthiest people, but they would not approve the payroll tax cut for average people. Because of the influence of the Tea Party, Congress cut funding to the FAA, Federal Aviation Agency. Right away, that lost 4,000 jobs, people were laid off, lost billions in taxes to the government and gave it to the airlines, which pocketed it instead of passing it to customers. I stopped large airport projects, and you remember when air traffic controllers were falling asleep because there was only one on the job? That stopped the funding for more air traffic controllers. It stopped the funding for rural airports (the Tea Party wanted to shut them down). So there really is a distinction between the parties and what they're doing, and these policies affect everyone.

No. The "projection" for climate change is 1 degree by 2100. The graph I gave you earlier shows a temperature difference of 0.6 degrees since 1920 or 30 I think. Frankly, Allen, I just thought it was ironic that you live in Carbondale or work there. Look, not all eco-solutions are viable. But we need to keep working on them. But if you're one of those people who believethe earth is only 6,000, there's no use even pretending to talk science.

First, buy a spell checker. Secondly, there is no overwhelming scientific concensus about the warming of the earth being solely created by the actions of mankind. None, nada, zippo, zilch. I challange you to find me a consensus that says, "Because of man, the earth is getting warmer". All of the evidence for the increase in temperature of the earth is all speculative at this point. There simply isn't enough data to prove or disprove the CAUSE of the temperature fluctuation, which by the way is only 0.6 degrees since around 1980 and only goes back to about 1850 and at that time the earth was actually cooling a bit. The FACT is that the temperature of the earth is entirely speculative to the point of being a lie. That's true science, not psuedoscince. And where did you get the idea that Gore is trying to raise taxes? You clearly have no clue what he does or what is going on. And by the way, I don't want my taxes to take care of anything that is unnecessary and neither does anyone else. Why do you think every time they talk about raising taxes it's because of schools, fire, police, or the elderly…..not global warming. The deficit business is a sidetrack from the job issue. Notice the Tea Party's not talking about jobs? They got rid of 4,000 jobs when they defunded the FAA and stopped billions of dollars of revenue going to the government. And no, it didn't come back to customers of the airlines. The deficit is important, but Ron Paul and the Tea Party have a meat-axe approach. Their real aim is to grid of Medicare and Social Security. I guess if you don't need Medicare when you're 65 than it won't matter. But you don't know what will happen. If you were disabled by illness or accident, and your savings were all gone, you would wish you had it. Thoew things can be cut with a scalpel instead of a meat-axe. Ron Paul as well as the other Tea Party people are completely unwilling to cut tax cuts and loopholes for the 1% of the country that owns 45% of the wealth. That would actually go a long way to cutting our deficit. On the other hand, if you think they're for the working or middle class, better think twice. They opposed the payroll tax cut, which is for middle and below income working people. They always been against raisibng the minimum wage. It's too bad people believe all the hype but they don't follow politics closely enough to see the effect it could have in their own lives.

Not a problem, Glenda. I'm glad your doing your research. The main problem with the warming of the earth is there is simply not enough data to difinitvely say it's man's fault. The true scientific data on temperature only goes back to the mid 1800's. CO2 data didn't come around until the mid 1900's so really, the only data to justify CO2= an increase in temperature is less than 100 years. If they used the same +/- statistics to put a man on the moon they'd be crazy!

Hi Chris. I'm sorry I got heated up during this discussion. Aside from politics and all that, we would probably like each other as people if we met. I shouldn't get involved in personal animosities. I think everyone should agree to disagree, as they say. I do believe the scientific dats is recorded in the ice. There are layers, various gases recorded in those layers – they can tell temperature from those layers. I did look up what you said but I'll go with, especially, the data from Dr. James Hansen – interesting to read what he has studied and conclusions on Wikipedia. However, you'll probably never agree, and that's o.k. Everyone will be happy because I'm getting off this comment line!

Peyton, I understand your sentiment, but there are economic factors to be weighed besides "let's just do everything we can." Let's assume that it were to increase the cost of energy by a considerable sum, and did very little to really lower output. The Kyoto Protocol threatened to increase costs considerably while doing very little reduction in the long run. That's what the debate is really about. Who knows, in 50 years we may be past fossil fuels thanks to better solar panels, space-based solar arrays, fusion or perhaps something truly from left field that we can't even see coming yet like harvesting dark matter from space. To make a hasty knee-jerk decision now would be the wrong move.

Also, the whole doom and gloom outlook of global warming is a bit short-sighted. While there would be some negative consequences, there are positive factors to consider. Some forests might become deserts, but some deserts might become forests as weather patterns shift. Growing seasons might be slightly extended, and farmland further north could possible open up. If the planet does warm up a few degrees, adaption is not out of the question.

So basically, let's not panic. We can't accomplish all our goals at once, and we really do have time on this one.

Chris, are you not aware that the dust bowl was caused by man? Farming methods that depleated the soil, spawned a chain-reaction and created the dust bowl. And as far as an "agenda" if clean air, a healthy environment and continued life on planet earth is an "agenda" it is definately on mine!

Mike, you criticize Al Gore, (like Rush told you to, in fact I'll bet you call him algore as instructed) but the truth is he is warning people about what science says is a fact. Now if environmentalists are wrong about global warming, we wind up with a cleaner planet alternative energy that doesn't require oil, and we pull money out of the Arab oil market. If environmentalists are right, we do all of that and we save the planet. But Mike if you are wrong, and we follow the do-nothing about it agenda of the Republicans? Good by planet earth. Dayle, I fully agree that we need to become an energy independent nation that doesn't rely on middle eastern and south american nations. The US has more oil in the ground than anywhere else in the world so why not drill it now while we figure out a more efficient green energy platform to fuel our lives in the future? That removes our immediate dependence and will not only satisfy our energy consumption but will provide an immediate increase to the american economy, both of which we need desperately! As to global warming, all of the evidence pointing to man being the direct cause is merely speculation. There is simply not enough data to support nor deny that fact and to create fear out of it is irresponsible. I can still agree that we need to find cheaper, cleaner energy. I can agree that it will be better for everyone if we do. I agree that we need to get out of the middle east and south america. But to say that we will destroy the world we know if we utilize the US resources to get there is insanity. By that explination alone you're admitting that you cannot scientifically prove that man is causing global warming. And the "facts" that Al Gore preaches are simply current data.
