Avril Lavigne’s ‘Racist’ Video Got Parodied [Video]

The internet was up in arms when punk rocker Avril Lavigne released the music video to her new song “Hello Kitty.” Avril’s video featured a litany of racist Asian stereotypes and blatant, shameless pandering. Lavigne was slammed by both critics and internet-users alike for her insensitive content. Now it seems the people of the web are striking back against Avril full force.

Internet video content creator Tess Paras has just released a parody video of Avril Lavigne’s “Hello Kitty.” Paras turns the tables on Avril by singing about Canadian stereotypes to the tune of Avril’s own song. The song is titled “Hey There, Beaver,” and features a slew of innocent jabs at Canadian culture and some more subtle, hilarious criticisms of Avril Lavigne herself. For those who don’t know, Avril Lavigne is Canadian.

The video contains plenty of the usual go-to Canadian jokes, including references to beavers, hockey, flannel shirts and maple syrup. Not to mention a forced Canadian accent, i.e. words like “aboot” and “eh?” Even Boxing Day gets a mention. It leaves you wondering what Avril Lavigne would think if she saw the video. Would she be offended? Or would Avril simply get a kick out of it and continue with her inadvertently racist self-branding.

You can watch the video up above. If you think you might recognize one of the men in the video, it’s Damien from Mean Girls–the actor Daniel Franzese, according to Bustle.com. If you think you might recognize Tess Paras, it’s because she did another parody video a few months back of Lorde’s song “Royals.” This one was a little less mean-spirited, as it was simply about being typecast. Lorde is a generally well-liked celebrity while most people harbor some resentment for Avril Lavigne, for one reason or another. You can watch Paras’ Royals parody “Typecast” below:

Despite all the negative feedback, Avril Lavigne is keeping busy and continuing to pander to fans. Ironically, perhaps, she just scheduled two summer shows in Osaka, Japan. Apparently, Avril has quite a substantial following in Japan. Some fans in other countries are actually disappointed Lavigne is spending so much time with the culture she unwittingly insulted.

What do you think of the Avril Lavigne parody? Did Avril get what was coming to her?
