Lucy Hale Was ‘Uncomfortable’ During ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ Audition

Lucy Hale auditioned for a role in the steamy adaptation of E.L. James’ erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey. Since the book contains all sorts of sexy material, the actress admits that reading for the part was a bit uncomfortable.

The Pretty Little Liars star decided to audition for the role of Anastasia Steele in order to try something different from her previous acting gigs. According to Us Weekly, Hale’s resume features such notable efforts as How I Met Your Mother and Private Practice. Compared to Fifty Shades of Grey, these roles were remarkably tame.

Lucy Hale recently opened up about the audition to the folks at MTV News. Not surprisingly, she had to tackle some interesting dialogue during her meeting with producers. The whole situation apparently made the young actress a little uncomfortable.

Hale explained to the website:

“It actually was just me [in the audition]. It was a two-page monologue of exactly what you would think it would be. Very uncomfortable, but it was sort of one of those things where you just had to go for it or you’re just gonna look lame — hopefully, I didn’t look lame.”

Lucy Hale admitted that she wouldn’t have wanted certain members of her family to watch her portray Anastasia had she landed the role in the upcoming adaptation. However, that doesn’t mean she wasn’t a little disappointed about losing the role to Dakota Johnson.

She continued:

“I think any girl in my demographic would have loved to be a part of it. Mainly, I was just interested in doing something risky and doing something a little different than my character on ‘PLL’ so it took me out of my comfort zone.”

Lucy Hale is probably a little disappointed that she won’t star in the flick, which is sure to become one of the biggest hits of 2015. At least she’s in good company these days. Charlie Hunnam, who was once slated to portray Christian Grey in the adaptation, definitely seemed a little bummed that he’s not involved with the project.

He recently told Life & Style magazine:

“I felt like I had an interesting take on that character and felt like I could have done a good job of playing Christian Grey, otherwise I wouldn’t have taken it on in the first place. When you put the time into something like that and a character comes alive in your mind, it’s heartbreaking not to be able to play him… It was definitely kind of heartbreaking having to say goodbye to that character and not bring it to life.”
