‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1’ Teaser Trailer Impressions

Suzanne Collins, the author of the best selling The Hunger Games book series, is unquestionably even more successful now that her creation has been turned into a big-time movie franchise.

The first two films in The Hunger Games series cemented the A-List status of Jennifer Lawrence, who was previously only known for her Oscar-nominated turn in indie flick Winter’s Bone. The film’s have also earned hundreds of millions of dollars at the global box office thanks to an assortment of great acting, writing, and cinematography.

Now the much-anticipated third entry in The Hunger Games franchise, Mockingjay – Part 1, is being brought to the big screen. And it’s shaping up to be the most dramatic, supremely exciting entry thus far. Picking up directly where The Hunger Games: Catching Fire left off, Mockingjay finds Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence) at odds with the all-powerful, totalitarian government based in the Capitol of Panem.

Everdeen’s main nemesis is portrayed by legendary actor Donald Sutherland, co-star of Animal House and Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Sutherland returns for the third time as the cunning and conniving President Snow.

The president and his soldiers have been watching Katniss like a hawk ever since she won The Hunger Games the first time around. And Snow shows no signs of letting up anytime soon, especially taking into consideration that she is trying to cause a district uprising and overthrow the longstanding Capitol.

The gloriously shot teaser begins with President Snow addressing an audience via state run television station Capitol TV. He says, “Since the dark days our great nation has known only peace. Ours is an elegant system conceived to nourish and protect.”

That “system” specifically refers to the violent gladiator-like sport known as The Hunger Games. Katniss Everdeen is a two-time champion of The Hunger Games and her ingenious tactics, including rescuing her boyfriend Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) the first time around, don’t sit well with President Snow. The rules specially outline the fact that their is to be only one winner.

Snow goes on to espouse more silly rhetoric. He specifically says, “If you fight against it, it is you who will bleed. And know you will stand with me, with us, with all of us together as one. Panem today. Panem tomorrow. Panem forever.”

President Snow, with Peeta stoically looking on, talks about how things will be different if people fight against “the system” and The Hunger Games institution. The Mirror refers to Peeta’s presence as “deliciously evil.” We certainly hope he hasn’t transferred to the dark side!

Somewhat ironically, the teaser trailer shows Peeta and President Snow sitting on a white throne located in an all-white room. And they themselves are dressed in white suits. The trailer proceeds to fade to black.

All this teaser trailer does is wet your beak and leave you hungry for more, but that’s exactly what Lionsgate Studios wants. The Hunger Games trailer will definitely will have that desired effect on many a fan.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 teaser trailer ends with the Capitol’s website displayed. Most of the districts struggle to even heat their homes in the wintertime and most citizens cannot even put food on the table with any regularity! Accessing a website seems to be the least of their worries.
