Kate Upton Felt Overweight, Not Sexy Hot, When Starting Out As A Model

When Kate Upton started her modeling career at the age of 15, she said she felt almost overweight in comparison to the stereotypical skinny almost-anorexic models that tend to fill the pages of fashion magazines.

In a related report by The Inquisitr, Kate Upton is now representing Express and Bobbi Brown Cosmetics as their model. Upton’s birthday was just the other week and she celebrated as only a celebrity can imagine.

The fashion world does not seem to know what to do with Kate. Professional models often push themselves to unhealthy limits for their art, forming their bodies into makeup-covered skeletal husks shambling down the runway. The stereotype of the skinny, anorexic model prevails for a reason. I remember showing up for a modeling photo shoot where everyone first met at a Chinese buffet. All the photographers chowed down but all the models huddled together and refused to eat anything.

Upton is not the stereotypical model. In fact, in the past she’s been criticized as being “too fat” to be a model. In middle school, Kate Upton’s breasts were even dismissed as “too small.” At one point, V Magazine even complained that we see Kate Upton naked way too much and talked about the fashion world wanting to put more clothing on her. There was even a lawsuit when a website edited her old body paint photo shoots to make Kate Upton nude.

Upton even claimed that modeling agencies were wanting to reject her at first because of her all American girl appearance:

“I’m not going to name names, but one agency told me, ‘You’re too American, and everybody knows American women are lazy. I was so offended! I’ve never been so offended! I was like, ‘You know that you’re in America, right?’ And it wasn’t ‘American models’—it was ‘American women are lazy,’ period! I feel like a lot of women would disagree with that. A lot!”

Apparently, the toughest hurdle Upton ever faced was breaking into the modeling business in the first place:

“When I was 15, I just walked into a modeling agency and I wasn’t afraid. I figured nothing to lose, no regrets. I always try to stay positive and see potential opportunities… In the beginning of my career, slimmer, less curvy models were more popular and I got down on myself. I didn’t feel as confident or as beautiful, but it made me realize that it’s not about what people say to you or what people think, it’s about competing with yourself and being the best that you can be. But also, I don’t take myself too seriously.”

Kate Upton also said her favorite beauty icons are Lauren Hutton and Audrey Hepburn. What she loves most about those two women is the way they carried themselves and their great sense of style.

Do you think the fashion world has been too harsh to Kate Upton?
