Amy Adams Goes Coach: Gives First Class Seat To U.S. Soldier

According to one of the witnesses who saw it happen, actress Amy Adams pulled a class move this morning (June 26) when she gave up her first class seat for an American soldier and instead took his coach seat.

The act was witnessed by ESPN’s Jemele Hill, co-host of the network’s Numbers Never Lie, who tweeted about what she saw on her flight from Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport in Michigan.

In an e-mail with a digital reporter for the Today show on NBC, Hill said she saw the Academy Award-nominated and Golden Globe-winning Adams a few rows behind herself in First Class when she boarded the flight before noticing the change up.

“When we were waiting to board, I saw her glance the soldier’s way and then she said something to the person she was traveling with. Once we boarded, I saw she was in first class. I was upgraded to first class and she was a couple rows behind me. I think she must have said something to the flight attendant, because before we took off she had vacated her seat and the flight attendant brought the soldier to her seat.”

In a separate e-mail to ABC News, a sister network to Hill’s ESPN, she told them that she did not initially think the soldier knew who gave him the first class seat. But with all the attention the act of kindness is receiving, that could change.

“I was incredibly impressed, and I’m not even sure if the soldier knew who gave him that seat. I guess he will now,” Hill told ABC News.

As for why Adams may have been compelled to give up her seat — besides the possibility that she just genuinely wanted to do the right thing — the website Lightly Buzzed reports that Adams comes from a military family herself.

“Many don’t know that Amy Adams was born in Vicenza, Italy, where her father Richard (U.S. Army Serviceman), was stationed. Being raised in a military family is probably the reason Adams has such reverence for servicemen. While Amy Adams is most assuredly not looking for any applause or a pat on the back for giving her seat away, especially to a United States Military Serviceman, she definitely deserves one.”
