Karen O To Release First Solo Album This Fall

Karen O will release her first solo album later this year.

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs singer has released a handful of solo tunes since the band’s formation back in 2000, though she’s yet to embark on a project all by herself that isn’t connected to a major motion picture. However, this is all set to change this fall.

According to the good folks over at Reverb, Karen O’s first solo album should officially arrive on retail shelves this September. The album, which bears the title Crush Songs, will tackle the singer’s quest to find true love.

Regarding her first solo album, she explained:

“When I was 27 I was crushed a lot. I wasn’t sure I’d ever fall in love again. These songs were written and recorded in private around this time. They are the soundtrack to what was an ever continuing LOVE CRUSADE. I hope they keep you company on yours.”

Julian Casablancas, who fronted the New York post-punk revival band The Strokes, will release Karen’s first solo album on his Cult Records label. The release date is presently set for September 9, though that date should get shuffled around a bit before Karen’s project finally arrives in our stereos.

Rolling Stones reports that Casablancas is understandably excited to share Karen O’s first solo album with the masses.

He explained:

“So excited, lucky and proud to be involved with such a classic album — I just want to listen to it all day.”

Fans of the singer have already received a few samples of what Karen is capable of producing outside of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Not only did she cover Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” for David Fincher’s version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, she also recorded the tune “The Moon Song” for Spike Jonze’s drama Her.

In 2009, Karen teamed up with Jonze for the soundtrack to his adaptation of the classic children’s book Where the Wild Things Are. The project, one this writer is particularly found of, earned the singer Golden Globe and Grammy nominations.

She told Paste magazine:

“I’m in Spike’s big-kid club. Most of the creative people that Spike works with are children trapped in grownup’s bodies. Spike came to me with the idea of the music having a similar mood to The Langley Schools Music Project, Innocence and Despair, which is a children’s choir singing melancholy pop songs by David Bowie and the Beach Boys, etc. I don’t know how close we got to that idea in the end, but the intention was to write simple melodies that were emotionally complex — something that both kids and adults would appreciate.”
