Once Dumped By His Ex For Being Too Poor, Chinese Man Books Entire Cinema For $40,000

A Chinese man in the news for his expensive way of getting back at his ex-girlfriend. The man, identified only by his first name “Wang” spent an astronomical 250,000 RMB ($40,000 in American money) to book three IMAX cinemas for himself for the first-day showings of the latest Transformers movie on June 27. The reason? He wanted to prove his ex-girlfriend wrong and show her that her reason for dumping him seven years ago was wrong.

According to Chinese news portal CCTV, Wang initially posted a message to Chinese social media website Weibo saying that he would offer free tickets to people who retweet (or re-weibo) his message across. His original message was reposted many times over by over 90,000 people. For people who were not convinced that it was a mere publicity stunt, Wang actually posted the receipts for his tickets with the ticket price clearly written on it.

His messages, translated from Chinese read;

“I was so poor when we were in our fourth year at college in 2007 that I could not afford just two film tickets”

“I promised her when we first met that if she left one day, I would make the whole world know I was looking for her,” he said.

He also had this message for his ex:

“You said when you left for Beijing that I will always be that way. I have been working hard for the past seven years because of that sentence and today I spent half my monthly income to book all the seats in Beijing’s IMAX cinemas on June 27. I just want to say maybe your choice back then was wrong.”

Wang used the online handle “Chicken Run 1234” and kept an Avatar based profile picture on the site. He wanted the users to share the message across the Internet “till she sees it” and promised that those who help him would be rewarded with a free screening of the new Transformers movie.

Speaking to Chinese newspaper Beijing Youth Report, Wang told that the girl had left him in 2007 because at that time he couldn’t afford two tickets for a show, reports The Shanghaiist.

Most people in China were however not appreciative of Wang’s move and asked him to simply move on. A message from a user read thus;

“Time makes one grow up, and a grown-up should have a tolerant heart. Maybe you think her leaving was a mistake. But what you did just proves her wisdom. You’ve simply grown old, not grown up. Money doesn’t mean anything. Is having a better life really something you want to show her?”

Wang later revealed that his old girl did contact him. Both of them have put their feud behind – but they have no plans to rekindle their relationship.

Are the Chinese becoming too eccentric these days? The news about Wang’s bizarre splurge comes just days after a Chinese billionaire was busy doing publicity stunts in the U.S.
