Cancer Patient Performs ‘Gangnam Style’ Mastectomy Dance Before Surgery [Video]

A breast cancer patient performed a “Gangnam Style” mastectomy dance on her way to surgery. Doreta Norris, age 52, was understandably apprehensive about the procedure. However, she was determined to have a positive experience.

Norris shared her plan with the staff at Piedmont Henry Hospital in Stockbridge, Georgia. She said a special nurse, Brook Galimore, helped arrange the performance.

Doreta Norris wanted to enter the operating room in style — “Gangnam Style.” With staff members lining the hallway, Norris shimmied to Psy’s popular dance hit. The performance was even more special, as the doctors and nurses cheered and danced along.

Norris said she was incredibly moved that the staff participated in her mastectomy dance:

“I stepped out of my room and found hospital staff and doctors lining both sides of the hall… Staff came up to hug me, dance with me and give me words of encouragement. I truly felt like I could conquer the world.”

Although the hospital and staff have been supportive throughout her difficult journey, the dance added an unexpected and personal touch:

“The hospital staff could have given me medications, wheeled me into the operating room on a stretcher and that would be that… But the staff… cared about me, acknowledged my struggle and helped me overcome a difficult time.”

In addition to support from her family, friends, and the hospital staff, Norris credits her faith with keeping her strong.

In November 2013, a routine mastectomy revealed a “worrysome spot.” As reported by Piedmont.org, a subsequent biopsy confirmed Norris’ worst fears — she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Although the cancer was contained in her right breast, Norris opted for a double mastectomy. It was an incredibly difficult decision. However, she did not want to risk developing cancer in her left breast as well.

Norris underwent two surgeries to remove the breast tissue. Prior to the first procedure, she chose a “Gangnam Style” mastectomy dance to lighten the mood. Norris referred to the entire experience as “a gift.”

A third surgery, which will include reconstruction, is scheduled for this fall.

As reported by Medical Daily, Doreta Norris is currently cancer free. Although she is still recovering from the procedures, she is looking forward to plenty of time to dance by her self, and with her husband and children.

Doreta Norris’ “Gangnam Style” mastectomy dance is a true inspiration. For many women, a double mastectomy is a frightening prospect. For Norris, it was on opportunity to shine.
