‘Minecraft’ Xbox 360 to Xbox One world transfers teased and discussed by 4J Studios

4J Studios pulled off one of its usually teasing Minecraft Twitter updates on Thursday. This time it was to show how it works when owners of Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition transfer their world saves over to Minecraft Xbox One Edition. The developer also revealed some possible options for the transfer plus a stunning image of a creative build to show off the draw distances for Minecraft on the PS4 and Xbox One.

First, the image at the top of this post was shared in the following Tweet by 4J Studios to illustrate the transfer of Minecraft worlds from the Xbox 360 to the Xbox One.

The Minecraft: Xbox One Edition image is somewhat unremarkable at first glance. It shows a progress bar with large text above it that reads, “Retrieving Xbox 360 Save.” However, the smaller text in between says, “Downloading File Data.” It hasn’t been detailed by 4J Studios yet, but that suggests that Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition world saves will have to first be uploaded to Xbox LIVE’s cloud storage so that they can be downloaded to the Xbox One Edition.

If this is true, it potentially means that world transfers will only be available to Xbox LIVE Gold subscribers for the Xbox 360 and Xbox One as well as Playstation Plus subscribers on the PS3 and PS4. We are attempting to get confirmation from 4J Studios.

One of the distinguishing features of Minecraft: Xbox One Edition and PS4 Edition is the increased world size from the last-gen editions. 4J Studios said it was testing world sizes that were approximately 36 times larger but that extra space may not be available at launch for worlds that are being transferred.

One of the other benefits to upgrading to Minecraft: Xbox One Edition or PS4 Edition is the increased draw distance. 4J Studios demonstrated this with a beautiful recreation of Andy Scott’s “The Kelpies” sculptures located in the developer’s native Scotland.

Texture packs, skin packs and mash-up packs that were purchased for the current Minecraft releases can be used with the upcoming releases too. The majority of the packs will transfer over to the next-gen consoles with the exception of the Marvel-themed packs due to licensing issues.

Minecraft: Xbox One Edition, Minecraft: PS4 Edition and Minecraft: PS Vita Edition are all scheduled to launch sometime this August. Existing Xbox 360 and PS3 owners of the game can upgrade to the next-gen version for $5 while PS3 owners will get the PS3 version for free.

The new console releases of Minecraft should help it expand its new found lead over the PC edition of the game. Amazingly, the game is at 54 million units sold total and counting.
