Maroons 5’s Adam Levine Contemplates Life As A ‘Douchebag’

Maroon 5 vocalist Adam Levine understands that he is not an easy guy for many people to like, and he’s not too concerned about it.

Not only is he the lead singer for the successful band Maroon 5, Adam is a coach on the hit TV show The Voice, and he has been proclaimed as the Sexiest Man Alive by People magazine. He is also known for dating a slew of super models; in fact, he is currently engaged to super model Behati Prinsloo. They are set to wed this summer.

As if he didn’t have enough on his plate, now the head of Maroon 5 is staring in a movie musical, Begin Again. The character Levine plays in the movie is an indie musician who becomes a huge success. Success then takes the character to another level where he behaves badly and goes a little wild.

The 35-year-old recently sat down with GQ to discuss the similarities between himself as the front man for Maroon 5 and his character in Begin Again. Levine does not mince words and compares himself to a “douchebag.”

Several blogs and websites over the years have referred to Adam as such, including one article on BuzzFeed which lists 15 quotes from Levine in order to support the claim that he is a “sexy douche.”

The Maroon 5 star tells GQ, “So I’m gonna get really intricately self-reflective right now and ask myself the hard questions, to find out, once and for all, definitively, whether or not I’m a douchebag.”

Adam recalls old headlines, including the one from BuzzFeed, that have used the unflattering word to describe him in various colorful ways, and he pokes fun at himself while revealing some truth about the beginning of his life as a celebrity.

Maroon 5 started out in Los Angeles, California, as Kara’s Flowers when Levine was still in high school in 1994. The band renamed itself Maroon 5 in 2001 when the band regrouped after the members attended college. Recently Adam refused to say why the band was named Maroon 5 when he sat down with David Letterman, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Maroon 5 star said, “Can I give you some truth? The origin of the name is so bad and such a terrible story that we decided that shrouding it in mystery will make it a better story than the actual story … it works!”

Levine’s rock star life with Maroon 5 started out a little reckless, as he struggled with the sudden transition from a regular guy to a popular celebrity.

“All of a sudden I had money in my bank account. I hadn’t had a break in a long time. And I went a little … nuts,” Levine confessed. “I deserved to go a little bit nuts. And I had the time of my life.”

Adam defends his early wild lifestyle with Maroon 5, saying that women handle experiences differently than men, and as a man he most likely lived on a more “primal level.”

“Men are not as sophisticated as women. They’re not as mature as women. They’re not as connected with their emotions as women. There’s a very Neanderthal quality that still exists in a lot of men,” the Maroon 5 vocalist explained. “There was a time in my life when I lived probably a bit more on the primal level. And it was amazing.”
