Popular Disney Broadway Musical ‘Newsies’ Will Close This Coming August

In a related report by The Inquisitr, Broadway musicals have been gaining prominence over the last decade or so thanks to famous Broadway stars, such as Kristen Chenoweth, who will be playing Malificent on television, Adele Dazeem Idina Menzel, who is famous for her role in Frozen, and of course the majority of the cast of Glee, including Lea Michele.

According to Broadway Today, the popular musical was only supposed to run for a limited time, but ended up running for over two years. Featuring a wonderful score by eight-time Academy Award winner, Alan Menken, Newsies will play its final performance of its “limited run” at Broadway’s Nederlander Theatre on Sunday, August 24, 2014. Since its opening on March 29, 2012, it ran a total of 1005 performance with an attendance of over 1 million and a gross of $100 million. However, the popular musical was only supposed to play for 101 performances. The fact that it lasted so long shows how popular and beloved the Disney musical is. As a matter of fact, at the time of Newsies‘ closing, only the landmark musical Rent will have played at the Nederlander Theatre longer in its 93 year history.

Thomas Schumacher, President and Producer at Disney Theatrical Productions had this to say about the monumental run of Newsies:

“From our first performance, we have been humbled by the spontaneous and genuine outpouring of affection from fans and theatre community alike. Alan and Jack’s tuneful, rousing score, Harvey’s timely book, Chris’s muscular choreography and Jeff’s cinematic staging merged seamlessly to become a glorious work in the proudly classic tradition.”

For those who weren’t able to see the play on Broadway, never fear. According to The New York Times, an international tour of Newsies is scheduled to start in the beginning of October. I myself haven’t seen many plays, only Shrek: The Musical, but I know this will actually make some people I know very happy. Also, this will open theaters on Broadway for other up-and-coming shows, such as the rumored Broadway musical adaptation of Frozen, another Disney production.
