‘Superman X-Ray Vision’ Gun: MINI Z Allows Military To See Through Objects, Could Work With Oculus Rift

MINI Z is a gun-sized portable X-Ray machine that essentially gives the user Superman X-Ray vision, allowing soldiers and officials to see through walls and objects. But it’s possible that the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset could be combined with the tech for full X-Ray vision!

In a related report by The Inquisitr, some say the upcoming movie Batman VS Superman will fail because it’s introducing too many characters too quickly, but what if the intention is to set up the plot for a future movie based a well-known DC Comics franchise?

The company which produced the X-Ray gun, AS&E, intends the device to be used by law enforcement, first responders, border control, event security, maritime police, and general aviation security in order to check objects and environments that normally would be out of reach for normal, bulky X-Ray scanning devices.

Chuck Dougherty, AS&E’s President and CEO, explains:

“Leveraging the breakthrough capabilities of our Z Backscatter detection technology, the MINI Z system is AS&E’s initial offering of what will be a family of portable backscatter products. We have taken the technology behind the success of the ZBV(R) system and miniaturized it — making it more affordable and accessible to a broader range of customers. The MINI Z system is a game-changer for law enforcement and border security officials who are constantly challenged to quickly and accurately detect potential threats in hard-to-reach environments as they work to ensure the highest level of public safety.”

The MINI Z X-Ray gun is about the size and shape of a bullhorn and is used in conjunction with a Windows tablet PC to view the results. The device is capable of quickly generating multiple X-Ray beams so the internals of an object can be viewed from multiple angles. The biggest limitation is the range at which it can operate since it runs on ten watts of power. But the MINI Z is still quite an innovation since it took seven years to reduce a portable truck-size device into something that fits in a hand. The company still makes van-sized devices that use 3,000 watts for longer range, but at the expense of the cooling requirements being much higher.

In addition to military and security implementations, Joe Reiss, vice president at AS&E, says their technology could be combined with a virtual reality headset like the Oculus Rift in order to give the full Superman X-Ray vision experience:

“It’s one of the first things we thought of for this. There are a lot of complementary technologies.”

Of course, I’m pretty sure that certain people would want to have Superman X-Ray vision for their own purposes…

Unfortunately, having your own Superman X-Ray vision gun will probably not be possible for the average joe. The MINI Z sells at $50,000, which means you Superman wannabes will have to go borrow money from Batman.
