Brandon Phillips: Reds Star Signs Ball For Heckler ‘Dear Drunk Guy’
Brandon Phillips has a great method of dealing with hecklers.
The Cincinnati Reds star was sitting around in the dugout during a rain delay against the Pittsburgh Pirates this when a pretty creative heckler took over. The man had the few hundred people in attendance in stitches as he ribbed some of the players, but Phillips decided to give the man a taste of his own medicine.
The incident was witnessed by a Reddit user who goes by the name “Placenta-Claus,” and shared this week.
The user wrote:
My brother attended the Pirates/Reds game tonight and decided to get drunk and do some heckling. He started on Joey Votto earlier in the game, yelling things like “Votto has feminine hips!” and “Looks like Votto could easily birth twins!”. He said the crowd around him were chuckling the entire time.
Rain delay in the 7th inning, but afterwards, he got started on Brandon Phillips. Yelling “Hey everybody, look how slow Phillips is!”. My brother said the stadium was almost empty at this point, so his heckles rang loud and clear. According to him, Phillips even looked over and chuckled at one point.
Anyways, after the game, Brandon Phillips runs over and hands my brother this ball.
On the ball, Brandon Phillips had written a pretty hilarious note. A picture of the ball showed the words: “Dear Drunk Guy, Thank You 4 All The Love & Support!! Now Take This Ball And Shut The Phuck Up!! :)” The other side says, “From Yours Truly, Brandon Phillips 4 ‘Dat Dude.'”
The move went pretty far with the group of fans, who said Phillips won them over.
The Reddit user recounted: “He said Mr. Phillips was completely cool about the whole thing. We’re Pirates fans, but I’ll be rooting for the Reds as long as is doesn’t mess with Pittsburgh’s chances at a pennant.”
And when the fans tweeted a picture they had taken with Phillips, he even responded back to them.
