Belgium, who have already beaten Algeria, can seal their fate with a victory today, guaranteeing themselves a spot in the elimination round. Even a draw against Russia would leave Belgium in a strong position and is likely enough to help the advance. All the same, don’t expect Belgium to play for the draw. As a Yahoo Sports report quotes Belgium Coach Marc Wilmots:

“We play dominant and we always try to win. Teams respect Belgium now.”

Belgium defender Nicolas Lombaerts, who has played professionally in Russia since 2007, echoed that sentiment:

“They (Team Russia) are not the fastest players in the world. With our speedy forwards, we should be able to exploit that weakness.”

Russia, who played to a draw with South Korea, will be fighting to keep their hopes of advancement alive. Russia is currently tied with South Korea for the critical second place in Group H. While the Russian team could recover from a loss to Belgium (the highest ranked team in Group H), a victory would put them in a strong position with their remaining game being against Algeria (South Korea’s remaining game will be against Belgium).

FIFA currently ranks Belgium as the 11th strongest team in the world; Russia is ranked 19th.

It remains to be seen whether Belgium’s captain and star defender Vincent Kompany, who has suffered a groin strain, will be able to play. Coach Wilmots has expressed optimism that Kompany would be able to practice with the team with the intent that he will be able to start the match against Russia.

Belgium has had success against Russia in the recent past. Star striker Romelu Lukaku scored twice against Russia in the last meeting between the teams. He struggled in Belgium’s 2-1 victory over Algeria – a victory that most agree was much closer than it should have been – and will be looking for a return to form in today’s Russia vs. Belgium match.

Belgium is looking strong and sounding confident, but don’t write Russia off. Remember, the Russian team won a qualifying group that included powerhouse Portugal. Look for them to come out strong and looking to make up ground from their disappointing draw against South Korea – a game that they would have won had it not been for sloppy goalkeeping.
