Coke Goes Green For New Low-Cal Drink, Coke Life

Is Coca-Cola turning green? Before you stop buying cans of Coke because they’re not shiny and red like you’re used to, you may want to read this first.

Coca-Cola Life isn’t only changing the look of Coke but it’s giving its consumers or people who have walked away from the beverage a reason to come back. Coca-Cola Life is a stevia-sweetened answer to the regular Coke. In essence, Coca-Cola Life is attempting to give naysayers something to be happy about.

According to The Guardian, the beverage has been tested in countries like Argentina and Chile before it comes to the United States. It’s believed Coca-Cola Life will be available in the U.K. this coming fall. Although it is an all around healthier option, don’t call it a diet coke. Coke Life has four tablespoons of real sugar and 89 calories per can, which is less than 140 calories in a regular can of Coke. That said, if you can’t tolerate sugar you might want to pass this one up.

The Guardian explained the company’s intention in bringing the drink to the U.K.:

“The company said the new drink would help meet its pledges made under the UK government’s voluntary anti-obesity drive – the responsibility deal – and would offer consumers a greater choice.”

In the end, Coke isn’t pretending to be the ideal beverage for the typical health nut, but instead it’s giving consumers who want to be somewhat guilt free as they enjoy the brand.

With New York City’s limit on beverage sizes to California’s new law that allows this warning label, “Drinking beverages with added sugar(s) contributes to obesity, diabetes, and tooth decay,” Coca-Cola obviously had to rethink their image.

Coke Life answers two health concerns that have affected Coca-Cola’s drop in sales. It addresses full-calorie drinks and their “full-sugar” line of drinks. In addition, their Diet Coke drink hasn’t been receiving the best press lately due to artificial sweeteners being a nasty culprit behind weight gain, so it seems like Coke is trying to rebrand their image through their tentative new drink.

Coca-Cola’s chairman Muhtar Kent said this about getting Coke back on track:

“We believe in the North American market. We believe in the demographics, we believe this is a growth market.”

Despite all of that Action on Sugar’s Dr. Aseem Malhotra insists this is just the same old thing from Coca Cola:

“Whatever the company says, this is a product with a high sugar content and it will encourage people to have a sweet tooth. Companies like Coca-Cola have no interest whatsoever in public health.”

Is Coca-Cola Life the new drink for you?
