PS4 Vs Xbox One: Sales Reports Point To Sony For Another Win

The PS4 vs Xbox One console war is entering the second half of its first year, and Sony once again appears to have the win in sales. This could change in June if Microsoft continues to turn everything around and actually please the gamers with their changes, but it may be a long road ahead.

Before the PlayStation 4 and Xbone were even launched, Microsoft had a nasty habit of shooting themselves in the foot every time they opened their mouths. It was this cascade of terrible PR which eventually led to the departure of their creative director Adam Orth, famous for his “deal with it” Twitter rant about the “always on” requirement. The reveal event didn’t help either, focusing on TV, the Call of Duty: Ghosts dog, and sports, and hardly anything about the games themselves.

A lot has changed in the PS4 vs Xbox One debates, but not enough to turn the victory to Microsoft’s camp. May’s NPD sales report revealed that the PlayStation 4 sold 197,000 units, followed most closely, not by the Xbone, but by Nintendo’s 3DS racking up 97,000 units. At 77,000 units sold, the Xbox One failed to outshine Nintendo’s portable console. Adding insult to unjury, the Wii U trailed the Xbox One by a mere 16,000 units, showing the sales power that Mario Kart 8 has on the struggling console.

It wasn’t until June, however, that Microsoft finally started selling the Xbox One without Kinect and dropped the core system price to match that of the PlayStation 4. There are even claims that freeing the Xbone from the Kinect simultaneously frees up 10 percent of the processing capacity and could allow developers to reach the Xbox One 1080p 60fps benchmark.

This could be a turning point in the PS4 vs Xbox One console war.

Additionally it’s been stated that with Xbox One getting its own Games with Gold system similar to PlayStation Plus, the playing field has evened out a little bit more.

The addition of external hard drive support might help the Xbox One compete with the PlayStation 4’s easily swapped internal version, but it still requires additional physical space if you want more than eight to 10 games on your console. You might even want an additional external fan to help cool down that external hard drive so it doesn’t overheat like the Xbox 360 has been known to do.

We will only know in the following months, but for the month of May, Sony once again snagged the win in the battle of PS4 vs Xbox One.
