Demi Lovato Is Extremely Proud Of Her Heritage

Demi Lovato is extremely proud of her Mexican heritage.

Casual fans may not know that the “Neon Lights” singer’s father is of Mexican descent. According to EthnicCelebs, Lovato’s dad is from a “Mexican family that has lived in New Mexico for many generations.” The website also claims that her “paternal line traces back to Andres Lovato and Inasita Pena.”

Since many people believe that Demi Lovato is an incredibly positive role model for teenagers — she owned up to her addiction to drugs and alcohol and eventually kicked the habit — the folks at Cosmo for Latinas named her as “Fun, Fearless Latina of the Year.” According to The Huffington Post, Lovato is simply thrilled about the honor.

Demi explained to HuffPo:

“I’m really proud of [my heritage], especially the way that the Latin community is kind of taking over and rising above politically. Even though I don’t speak fluent Spanish, I love singing in Spanish. I love being able to represent the curvy sassiness of a Latina woman. It’s just a part of who I am, and I couldn’t be more proud to represent that.”

One Latina artist who had a huge influence on Demi Lovato’s career was late singer Selena Quintanilla. While Lovato was only 2 years old when she passed, Demi discovered Selena’s music through the 1997 motion picture starring Jennifer Lopez.

“Even my dad is totally like the dad in the movie, it’s just so similar. There is something about the movie that was really inspiring to me. After that, you know, the songs are great, even though I don’t know what the words are. I’m learning Spanish, but I don’t know it fluently yet,” Lovato told the website.

Things are definitely headed in a positive direction for the singer lately. In addition to a hit record and a successful tour, Lovato is presently involved in a loving relationship with actor Wilmer Valderrama. In fact, The Inquisitr previously reported that Demi and Wilmer are apparently anxious to start a family.

“Wilmer and Demi have spoken to each other a lot about their friends starting to have kids and Wilmer has the bug. He is trying to convince Demi to start a family but she feels she is too young and she still wants to work on music and she wants to be healthy for a few years before she does any of that,” an anonymous source explained to Hollywood Life.
