Walgreens announced on Thursday that they would begin offering electric vehicle charging stations at thousands of drugstore locations throughout the United States.

According to the company at least 800 stores will have charging stations by the end of 2011, with plans to expand that program to more of the firms 7,733 drugstores in the future.

The program will begin with stations installed in major cities that include: Denver, Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York and Washington, D.C.  After those locations stores in Florida, New Jersey, Tennessee, Washington and Oregon are expected to receive the green friendly charging spots.

The stations are expected to have high-speed direct current chargers which can add 30 miles of range in approximately 10 minutes or Level 2 chargers which add 25 miles for each hour of charge time.

The push for electric car charging stations comes as Nissan, Chevrolet and other car manufacturers try to offer electric only and hybrid cars for mass consumption such as the Nissan Leaf which only runs on electrical output.

Customers in the Chicago, Houston and the Dallas/Fort Worth areas may have already seen some of the Walgreen’s electric vehicle charging stations in action where they have already been installed and are being used by customers.

With Redbox units already sitting outside many locations Walgreens is giving customers more reasons than ever to pick up their RX’s from the nationwide drugstore chain.
