Jimmy Johnson will start tonight’s Coca-Cola 600 in the pole position. Johnson is currently 7th in the NASCAR Sprint Cup point standings and is still seeking his first Sprint Series win of 2014. He is followed by Brad Keselowski in the second position and Kasey Kahne in the third position. Danica Patrick starts in the fourth spot, her best starting position to-date in non-restrictor plate NASCAR races. Patrick is just coming off her best finish in a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race. Up until this point, Danica has managed to become one of NASCAR’s most popular drivers, leading the NASCAR pack in Twitter followers and racking up endorsements, but she has yet to take the checkered flag.

Could the NASCAR Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway give Danica Patrick her first win? The event has a long, celebrated history of giving drivers their first trip to the winner’s circle. Drivers who have won their first NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Charlotte in the Coca-Cola 600 include David Pearson in 1961, Jeff Gordon in 1994, Bobby Labonte in 1995, Matt Kenseth in 2000, Casey Mears in 2007, and David Reutimann in 2009.

Jeff Gordon comes into the NASCAR Coca-Cola 600 fresh off a win in Kansas and with the NASCAR Sprint Cup point lead. At one time, Gordon was dominant in Charlotte, but that was a long time ago. His last win in the Coca Cola 600 came in 1998. He crashed and finished a disappointing 35th in last year’s Coca Cola 600. He starts tonight’s race in the 27th position.

Matt Kenseth comes into the NASCAR Coca-Cola 600 second in the points, starting at the 12th position. Kenseth won the Coca-Cola 600 in his rookie season in 2000, but hasn’t found the winner’s circle since. Kenseth is looking for his first NASCAR Sprint Cup win of the season.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. starts the NASCAR Coca-Cola 600 in the 10th position tonight. Dale Jr. has had quite a season, passing his father up with his second win at Daytona, escaping a car fire in the Duck Commander 500, and even having a go-kart race with basketball legend Sir Charles Barkley. His first-ever win at Charlotte would be another great milestone, especially given recent rumors that Junior may retire.
