While the above image might strike some folks as rather perverse and suggestive the fact is that is a fantastic discovery caught on film of a synthetic vocal cord gel and it will allow people who have lost their ability to vocalize to speak once again.

Currently the gel is for people who have scarring in their vocal cords and it works very much like our natural vocal cords.

The synthetic gel, known as polyethylene glycol (PEG), is very flexible and works much like real vocal cords. By simply injecting it into someone’s vocal cords (yikes!), it can help restore their voice by mimicking the elasticity of their vocal cords and helping restore vibration to those stiffened by scarring.

By classifying it as an injectable medical device rather than a drug, they’re hoping to get it to market relatively soon. And for those unable to speak, it couldn’t come soon enough.
