Foo Fighters: ‘This Is Not A Crazy, Bleak Radiohead Album’

The Foo Fighters’ rocker Dave Grohl has always had a knack for candor. Throughout his career, which once included being the drummer for Nirvana, Grohl has been very open about discussing anything and everything with the media. He’s not afraid to throw punches at musicians he doesn’t like, and one way or the other he’s always had strong feelings on the music industry’s trajectory.

Coming up for Grohl and the Foo Fighters is their eighth studio album. During a new interview with Billboard magazine, Grohl was very open about what fans can expect from the upcoming album. The follow-up to the 2011 album Wasting Light was made to “make stadium anthems that startle.”

Grohl explained how the success of the Foo Fighters last album effected the upcoming sound. “As we were coming down from the success of the last record, I thought, ‘Now we have license to get weird.'” In the same breath he discussed what the new album won’t be.

“If we wanted, we could make some crazy, bleak Radiohead record and freak everyone out. Then I thought, ‘F- that.'”

For anyone who’s expecting the same old sound, you’ll be surprised by the upcoming album. Even though the Foo Fighters are sticking to what they know, they’re still deviating a bit from the formula they have played around with over the last decade.

Instead of “banging out these big choruses, because that’s what we do, we’re banging them out in the middle of instrumental sections that will take you by surprise. The music is a progression or an evolution, for sure, but it’s a Foo Fighters record.”

Fans of the Foo Fighters can also look forward to an upcoming HBO series that will document all of the recording sessions made by the band for the new album. The Foo Fighters recorded their eighth studio album in eight American cities — Chicago, Austin, Nashville, Los Angeles, Seattle, New Orleans, Washington, D.C., and New York.

The idea came off of the success of Sound City documentary, Grohl said:

“After making Sound City, I realized that the pairing of music and documentary works well because the stories give substance and depth to the song, which makes for a stronger emotional connection. So I thought, ‘I want to do this again, but instead of just walking into a studio and telling its story, I want to travel across America and tell its story.”

The untitled album is due in the fall.
