Queen Latifah: “Gay is the New Black”

Posted: July 15, 2011

Out of the “is he/she or isn’t he/she” celebrities, Queen Latifah is often mentioned as among the possibly closeted.

Rumors about Latifah’s sexuality have swirled ever since she hit it big, and intensified when she played a lesbian in the popular mid-90′s film Set It Off. The rapper turned actress has also long been suspected of having a relationship with her trainer, Jeanette Jenkins.

Whispers about Latifah’s personal life are intensifying now that the character she plays in Single Ladies has a minor gay subplot:

On Single Ladies, her character discusses the pros and cons of sexual anonymity, saying initially that network executives backed away from her fictional talk show. But later in the episode she returns to Val with a scheme to pretend they’re in a relationship because she’s now discovered that “gay is the new black.” The character reveals, “Being gay is fabulous…I have six new Facebook fan pages. And for every sponsor that falls out, I’ve gotten two more.”

While the question of Latifah’s sexuality is often posed, it shouldn’t override her amazing work. Coming out is a personal decision, and Latifah’s personal life is her own business. Still, a role model like Latifah would be great for gay and lesbian teens struggling with their own coming out issues. Do you think Queen Latifah is gay?

I thought she came out years ago. Who cares…she's a great actress. Personally I could careless what actors, actresses, or athletes do in their private lives. After they leave the stage, field, court, course, or track they're on their own time….just like anyone else that has a job.

I think Queen's sexuality is her personal business and should stay that way. Straight people don't come out because there sex life is nobody else's business and should not be a big deal. Why should people who are gay's only claim to fame is the their gayness? We don't need to get into everybody's bedrooms. Gay people are human beings and that is all I, or anyone else, need to know. I don't want to know what either gay or straight do in their bedroom. Just be whatever you are, which is between you and God. I got nothing to do with it.

  17. Yes, but we love her so who cares. who didn't know she was gay. No boyfriend, no husband it was obivious from the beginning but it did not stop us from admiring or loving her. I think she does not care who knows now that she has made it big.

  18. Why does it matter? She make me laugh that's what matters……………………..

Absolutely! But what is so much more important than her sexual preference is her extraordinary multi-faceted career! Singer, actor, rapper, Cover Girl! WOW I wish I had even a small percentage of her talent. And furthermore, she is a beautiful Black woman! Go Queen! We luv you. Thanks for being such a great role model.

I think its really sad and hypocritical of those who tend to obsess and try to generalize others based on race, color, or sexual preference. At the end of the day she's a talented musician/actress. I have much respect for the work that she has done in film and music as a whole and personally could care less who she decides to sleep with. We all will have our turn to answer for how we chose to live our lives. None of us have room to judge.

  25. amen

  26. Don't know, don't care.

  27. I don't care, but why do we non gays have get this thrown in our face all the time.

  28. Who cares if she is Gay or Straight.See this is the problem its the other people who make such a big deal about if a person is gay or not.I love Queen Latifah she a fun actress and has accomplished alot in her hollywood time.

Who cares? Being Gay or Lesbian is a question of what a person does in their own bedrooms and what there personal preferences are. It shouldn't even be a question. Everyone, including the media, needs to stop focusing on celebrity lifestyles and honor talented people for their talent and nothing else.

Who gives a crap if someone is gay or straight. That is such a insignificant part of what makes a person. It's like people would be prejudice against a group of people who are blonde. Oh, wait, people are prejudice against blondes. Never rmind.

  34. Who cares? I love The Queen!

She is. One of the female actresses in the show Living Single in a interview said that she tried to hit on her more than once while making the show.i.

  36. I think she is gay. What does it matter? If I don't have to tell people I am straight, why does anyone have to say if they are gay? I think she is a fantastic woman. Doesn't matter either way.

You better leave Kadeshia (sp) alone…..lol I'd hit on Kim Fields too ;-)

  38. I think it is not anyones business.
Let's worry about war and the economic security of this country.
    and leave private things alone.

  39. Queen Latifah is a legend in music and a fabulous actress. Coming out is her business, and I think it's great she did so she could be a role model to others. But besides being a role model I could care less because I'd love her through her extensive body of work.

  40. Can she still act? Then wtf cares if she is gay? YOU GO GIRL@!

  41. Let me rephrase that! Even if she couldn't act and was shave- a- dogs- butt- and- teach- it- to- walk- backwards- ugly_.
WTFC! It is her life and no one should be able to tell her what or how she should be and feel!

I really am so sick of hearing this crap. I don't care and I find it offensive to see this crap being pushed by the media all the freaking time. Sorry, but I do. You'll note that Latifah has not made it an issue, and good for her! People are much more than the sum of their choices.

  44. gay is the new black wtf?

I agree with the others. It does not matter if she's gay, bi or straight.. Not everyone jumps out of the womb ready the reveal their sexuality, like Perez seems to think should happen. I will say that the media and the public does have a right to speculate – freedom of speech & she put herself out there.. however, she doesn't owe her fans anything – if she doesn't feel comfortable revealing her sexuality, then so be it.. I am about 99% certain she is gay and about 99% certain that it doesn't matter to me one bit..as long as she's happy..

  46. I'm all for gay relations but seriously people need to mind their own buisness. It's her personal life if she wants it to be public then she would have done it a long time ago. However she did't so people should just drop it. Why does it matter anyway who she fucks or who any body fucks is personal DAMN.

  47. Ms. Latifah, I like your music, and your personal life is your business. But to imply Gay is the new Black…I do not agree! I see young people who like to be like their role models, and they think that Gay is a fad…it is not. These impressionable youths should be able to make up their own minds without being pressured , commercialized, or Gay social implications being placed all around them!

Who care's move on. We have more important thing's to print or try to find new thing's to print about. GET OVER IT PEOPLE. There are gay, black , white, brown, yellow, ect, ect,………… it's 2011 when are we going to move on and let people live there lives like they want to.This will not effect you in any way shape or form. We are never going to move on if we keep talking about people in there personal lives. Get your on life.

  49. The reason itz like that cuz gay ppl need a superhero figure head 4 there cause…just 2 say…itz ok 2 b gay…QL iz …then it must b ok…SMDH

I think it was Kim Fields or Kim Coles (the female comedian) that said this.

  54. Who gives a fuk, let herein be that's her business & more power to the Queen!

  55. I love her acting and she is funny, but it saddens me. I don't know what saddens me most though, the fact that she is or that nobody cares. It doesn't change how much I like her. I worry about her soul. The bible says no gays will enter Heaven. If u care, pray for her.

  56. who did not know that, that's her business.

  57. I like her she hot
