The Canadiens vs. Rangers series moves to New York for the next two games as the Canadiens find themselves in unfamiliar territory, two games behind and fighting for their playoff lives. The Rangers carry a 2-0 series lead and all the momentum into tonight’s game 3 at Madison Square Garden.

The Rangers have won five in a row against two of the toughest teams in the National Hockey League. The ran the table on the Boston Bruins after falling behind three games to one before skating away with the first two games of the Rangers vs. Canadiens series.

Much of the Rangers’ spark has come from forward Martin St. Louis, who has been playing through the grief of losing his mother suddenly and unexpectedly before Mother’s Day. According to a Yahoo! Sports report, St. Louis had this to say headed to home ice for games three and four:

“It’s a good feeling, but we know we’ve accomplished nothing yet. We’re trying to prepare for a Montreal team that’s going to come out with a lot of energy. We know that. This is a big game for everybody. We know where the series is, and it’s a big opportunity for us.”

The Rangers have the chance to win it all on home ice and head to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 1994, in the Wayne Gretzky era.

If Montreal is going to claw its way back into the Rangers vs. Canadiens series, it’s going to have to do it without stat net minder Carey Price. Price was injured in game one and doesn’t look to return soon. In a surprise move, Montreal coach Michel Therrien gave backup goaltender Peter Budaj a big vote of no-confidence and will be starting third-string goalie Dustin Tokarski for the second time. Tokarski has a grand total of 11 games experience backstopping an NHL team.

Look for Montreal to turn up the heat on New York net minder Henrik Lundqvist, who has been stellar over the past five games. Canadiens’ captain Brian Gionta put it this way:

“We lost the first two games. We’ve got to do something different. But at the same time, we had a pretty good game in Game 2. We’ve just got to find ways to get more goals and get to them a little more offensively.”
