Joe Biden Declines Prom Invite, Sends Corsage

Vice President Joe Biden had to decline a prom invitation from a Connecticut teen, but he didn’t ignore it.

Second banana Joe Biden was the first dude that Talia Maselli considered when her senior prom rolled around. Maselli, 17, is a student at Newington High School in Connecticut — and she was dateless for the big do.

Thinking Biden might not be all that busy this spring, the high school senior observed that the Veep might be a fun prom date, saying:

“Most girls invite their celebrity crushes and stuff and I don’t have a celebrity crush… But Joe Biden cracks me up so I thought he’d be a good person to ask.”

In fact, the teen referred to his comedic chops in her “formal” invite, asking Biden:

“Dear Mr. Vice President, man of many chuckles, I’d like to formally invite you to my senior prom.”

Maselli cracked a joke of her own as well, adding that in the event Biden was unavailable, she’d have to cross party lines:

“I have to invite Speaker John Boehner [of the House Of Representatives], and we can’t have that now, can we?”

When Maselli sent the invite way back in September, she didn’t really expect any sort of response, much less an official one. The senior tells a local news station that she expected her letter to be filed away unseen, adding:

“When I sent it, I thought there’s no way it’s going to get through to him… No one is going to show this to him.”

However, someone seems to have pinged the Vice President with Maselli’s request, and he did respond.

Biden sent a letter, declining with regrets, and saying:

“Dear Talia. Thank you for your lovely invitation to be your escort for your prom. I’m flattered, but my schedule will not permit me to be in Connecticut on Friday evening.”

That’s not all he sent, however, and the Veep or someone working on his behalf also hit up Kim’s Flower Shop in Wethersfield for a special, red, white and blue corsage to be given to the civically-minded teen girl.

Over on Twitter, Biden tweeted about the corsage and prom, with a handwritten note and the comment:

“I hope you will accept this corsage and enjoy your prom as much as I did mine.”

Biden also said:

“I would now like for you to be my guest to the West Wing as soon as you are available, if you’re willing.”

We laughed:

Maselli plans to visit Joe Biden this summer, but the Connecticut teen also opted to give the prom a pass.
