Deryck Whibley: Sum 41 Singer Nearly Died From Alcoholism, Spotted Looking Frail

Deryck Whibley spent the last month in the hospital, and the Sum 41 singer said years of hard drinking left him on the verge of death.

The 34-year-old shared with fans his near-death experience in a blog post, admitting that years of drinking “finally caught up with [him].” Whibley collapsed last month while on a drinking binge and was raced to the hospital, where he was admitted to an intensive care unit.

In the new blog post titled, “Rock Bottom,” Deryck Whibley said doctors told him that his kidneys and liver had collapsed on him, which finally “scared [him] straight.”

“I finally realized that I can’t drink anymore,” Whibley wrote. “If I have one drink the doc’s (sic) say I will die. I’m not preaching or anything, but just drink responsibly. I didn’t, and look where that got me.”

Deryck Whibley shared several photos of his harrowing hospital experience, showing the singer laying in a hospital bed looking gaunt. Other pictures showed the singer in obvious pain as nurses tended to him, and another shot of his arm covered in bruises.

This week, photographers caught up with the Sum 41 singer for the first time since his hospital stay, showing him looking aged and frail as his fiance Jocelyn Aguilar helped him walk down the street.

In his blog post, Deryck Whibley promised fans that he would turn around his life and focus on putting out new music.

“Anyway I have my passion and inspiration back for writing music,” he wrote. “I already have a few song ideas for new songs. Soon it will be time to start making an album and getting back to touring again. See you all sometime! There will be more posts again so say up to date friends.”

The singer has the support of his ex-wife, Avril Lavigne, in his recovery. The fellow Canadian singer tweeted in support of her ex, writing:

Deryck Whibley added that he hopes fans can learn by his example and avoid his mistakes.
