The White-Eye bird can poop live snails – who knew.

Posted: July 11, 2011

Science is pretty incredible and for every great discovery there are probably ten WTF were they thinking types of discoveries and this one out of Japan definitely rates in the second batch.

It seems that for the longest time Japanese biologists believed that Japanese White-Eye birds left now prisoners when they mowed down on a local delicacy of T. boeningi snails that the snails would end up dead, they were after all lunch.

Contrary to belief though it seems that 15 percent of the snails that are eaten by theses birds actually survive and travel though the bird’s intestines and get pooped out alive.

The reason the snails survive seems to be their size, which, at about 2.5mm (less than a tenth of an inch), is too small for the birds’ beaks—or digestive systems—to cause harm.
