Iggy Azalea Explains Why She Adores ‘Clueless’

Iggy Azalea adores the 1995 comedy Clueless so much that she used several iconic moments from the film in the music video for “Fancy.”

If you were a teenager in the 90s, then there’s a strong possibility that you caught director Amy Heckerling’s flick in a darkened theater during opening weekend. This obviously means you’re older than you’re ready to admit, but at least you can say you enjoyed the flick before Iggy Azalea without sounding like some kind of desperate hipster.

The Australian rapper discussed her love for Clueless during a recent chat with the folks at Fuse. Azalea said she feels her song “Fancy” is sonically in-tune with Heckerling’s classic comedy.

“Growing up, ‘Clueless’ to me was that stereotypical L.A. Valley Girl movie, and it was very hard for me as a kid to know what was real and what wasn’t real. [I wondered], ‘Is that really how people in L.A. dress? Do they really all talk like that?'” Azalea explained.

She continued, “The line was very blurred, I really wasn’t sure. I wanted to do something unexpected, but still very L.A. and West Coast as a tribute to, sonically, how it sounds.”

Not surprisingly, Iggy told USA Today that she spent a lot of time watching the movie when she was a kid. When it came time to film the music video for “Fancy,” Azalea was able to embody Cher Horowitz (Alicia Silverstone) and wear the character’s iconic clothes.

“I watched it over and over and over again growing up. I just always liked the storyline and loved the fashion. I love to dress very colorful and wacky like they do in ‘Clueless’ in my regular life. I’m always just in that film,” she told the publication.

Azalea was so jazzed about the clothes she wore during the video shoot that she wanted to take a few of the more outrageous pieces home. Iggy said she was a little surprised that one of the world’s most renowned fashion companies made some of the clothes seen in Clueless.

“I really loved the baby-pink, Chanel romper I wore when I was eating lunch with Charli. That’s something I wanted to steal and own. I loved it! It’s just so trashy, I was like, ‘Did Chanel really make this? Is this really real Chanel?’ It was and it’s brilliant. I love it,'” she told Fuse.

Are you a fan what of Iggy Azalea? Do you think the rapper paid proper respect to Clueless with her music video for “Fancy”?
