Federal Employee Watches Porn All Day, Gets Bonus

A federal government employee who reportedly spent two to six hours every day during business hours watching porn not only didn’t get fired, but actually received performance bonuses.

The employee in question works for the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). According to the EPA Deputy Assistant Inspector General who recently testified on Capitol Hill, the employee admitted to downloading 7,000 X-rated files which he watched on his office PC while on the taxpayer’s dime. A government investigator apparently even spotted him watching internet porn.

The employee, who is still on the payroll, earns about $120,000 a year on his government salary. The IG’s office has referred the matter to the US Justice Department for prosecution, but it remains to be seen if anything will come of that.

In the private sector, a worker caught watching porn on company time would be shown the door immediately. The hurdles involved in firing government workers with civil service and union protections, however, are significant, even for misconduct.

Another EPA employee was reportedly, among other things, running a retail side business from her EPA office, according to the IG. She also received a performance bonus.

The EPA has come under scrutiny for mismanagement after a climate change expert employed by the agency was sentenced to 32 months in prison for defrauding the government when he was collecting a fat salary while not doing any work.

The IG also claimed that certain officials within the EPA are stonewalling the probe of agency practices.

Despite initial vows of transparency, the Obama administration has in general been less than cooperative with efforts by government watchdogs to investigate waste and fraud in the federal sector.

Moreover, any efforts to make even minimal reductions in the bloated federal budget are met with scare tactics about the danger to essential services. Remember how the world was going to come an end during the sequester last year? It turns out that exactly one (1) federal employee was let go as a result of “draconian” budget cuts.

Should the EPA — the government department charged with ensuring clean air and water — be renamed the Extreme Pornography Agency?
