Calvin Harris’ ‘Summer’ Shoots To The Top Of The Charts

Scottish DJ Calvin Harris has topped the UK charts with his dance single “Summer,” earning his fourth number one spot on the Billboard UK Top 100 list. Calvin’s single rocketed to the top spot on May 4 and has stayed comfortably in the lead over “Waves” by Mr. Probz and “Hideaway” by Kiesza.

Calvin Harris is a dance and electronic musician, producing upbeat and powerful club music since 2007. His music, which some consider to be progressive “nu-disco,” has so far spanned three full length albums with a fourth on the way. Harris’ newest hit “Summer” was released on March 14 and is still earning airtime. The single will appear on Calvin’s up-coming album, still unnamed.

As you’d expect from a dance track, the song is fast and full of punch. However, though Harris is considered a DJ, his music consists of more than just looped beats and minimalist synth lines. “Summer” features surprisingly emotional vocals and a wide variety of dynamics, ranging from calm, sentimental verses to a bright and colorful chorus.

Calvin Harris has enjoyed a great deal of success in his career so far, having become the first artist to release nine top 10 singles within a single album, 18 Months, according to The Telegraph. Billboard also reported that Harris holds the honor of having six number one singles, a record that is only topped by the artists Rihanna, David Guetta and Madonna, who have each earned seven number one spots. Calvin’s song “Summer” has so far sold over 100,000 copies through Columbia/Sony.

As for Calvin’s personal life, he is currently dating fellow pop music star Rita Ortiz. It seems that his relationship is going about as well as his music career. Harris recently voiced his concern that he was spending too much time with Rita, which isn’t much of a problem at all.

The 30-year-old DJ was born in Dumfries, Scotland, and got his start in electronic music by creating demos in his bedroom during his teen years. He found his first bit of success in the music industry at age 21 with the songs “Da Bongos” and “Brighter Days.” If Calvin plays his cards right, he could have another few decades of number one singles.
