Honest Janitor Who Turned In $100,000 He Found Stuffed In Toilet Now Gets To Keep The Cash

Chamindu Amarsinghe was working as a janitor when he came across more than $100,000 stuffed in a disabled toilet.

Now, after doing the right thing and turning the money in, Amarsinghe is being rewarded for his honesty. A court in Melbourne, Australia, this week ruled that the janitor will receive the majority of the cash.

Magistrate Michael Smith said the janitor deserved to be rewarded for doing the right thing, awarding $81,597 to Chamindu Amarsinghe. The rest will go to the state.

The janitor said he was cleaning the bathroom floors back in August 2011 when he found a garbage can filled with bills.

“There was too much to count — I thought someone was playing a prank on me,” he said. “But when I touched the notes — all yellow and green – I realised it was real money.”

Amarsinghe was in shock, but called his supervisor to immediately report the stash of money. Police arrived and brought a plumber, who found more than $100,000 including $1,200 stuffed into the pipes.

Police waited for years to find the origin of the cash or wait for someone to claim it, but no one ever came forward.

Detective Senior Constable Daniel Thorne said after the money went unclaimed, everyone agreed that the janitor deserved to keep it.

“All the guys in the office felt the same. He’s a struggling student who straight-up didn’t even think of pocketing it,” Thorne told the Herald Sun.

Chamindu Amarsinghe said he doesn’t have any big plans for the money, and has since left work as a janitor to go to school for IT.

“I just want to spend my life in a normal way, find a job in IT and carry out that dream,” he said.

The honest janitor at least won’t have to worry about student loan bills thanks to the fortune he found in the toilet.
