Tigers’ Zoo Catwalk In Philadelphia Offers A ‘Safari-Like Experience’

The amazing all-new tigers’ catwalk at the Philadelphia Zoo offers visitors a unique experience, as well as a never-before-seen inside look at the wonderful animals. Visitors can, of course, safely view the tigers, roaming somewhat free, in long catwalk-like passageways,

The long cage-like snaking tunnels span from where the tigers sleep to an archway over the zoo’s promenade; they end at a viewing spot along a lake.

CEO of the zoo, Andrew Baker, said: “It becomes much more of a safari-like experience,” which it definitely does as the various animals can be seen roaming around the zoo.

The latest addition of the tigers’ catwalk at the zoo adds to the existing trails for small primates, and another for orangutans already in place at the zoo. The system was originally designed to improve the overall well-being and quality of life for the animals.

But the zoo soon realized that the catwalks offered guests a great insight into the animals and an all-round better zoo experience.

A visitor to the zoo on Wednesday, Johanna Dinardo, said she saw Amur tigers Wiz and Dmitri close up: “It’s really cool to see them walking above you. You almost feel like you’re in the wild with them,” she said.

Rotating animals has become more and more popular recently as “the public challenges zoos to improve,” said Ed Hansen, CEO of the American Association of Zoo Keepers.

The O Line at the National Zoo in Washington also lets orangutans travel between enclosures by swinging from cables high above the property: “It’s to replicate the natural environment as best as we can. It’s enriching to their environment and their mental capacity,” Hansen said.

The Philadelphia Zoo is really worth visiting if you want to see lions, tigers, pumas, jaguars and leopards which already rotate among five exhibits.

It is hoped that more and more zoos will take similar steps to offer their animals a better quality of life while they are living in captivity.
