‘Do Ya Think I’m Sexy?’ You’ll Be Surprised By What A New Poll Says About Humans And Robots

Robots have been part of science fiction since the earliest days of the genre, and they are becoming more part of science fact every day. Robots are now involved in almost every aspect of industry and even the military. In fact, robots are becoming such a familiar and, it would seem, comfortable part of human existence that according to a recent poll, almost 20 percent of us would happily have sex with one.

Now, this poll was conducted in the United Kingdom, as part of a promotional campaign for a TV series about a robot police officer, Almost Human, which was recently cancelled in the United States but has yet to make its debut in Britain. In other words, we report, you decide whether to take these results seriously or not.

The survey covered 2,000 British adults, and while it found a surprising willingness among Her Majesty’s loyal subjects to indulge in sexual intercourse with a machine, it also found a widespread fear that robots will take over in the not-too-distant future.

In fact, one out of every three British citizens believe that at some point in the future, robots will threaten the existence of the human race. Which seems plausible if part of their sinister plan is to replace other humans as sexual partners. Since one presumes that the ability of a robot to cross breed with a human being biologically is a very long way away, the more people have sex with robots, the fewer humans there will be.

But maybe that’s a good thing, at least for some Britons. A full 11 percent in the poll said they would like to have a robot child. And 20 percent preferred robot pet to a real kitty or dog.

To be precise on the issue of robot-human sexual relations, 17 percent of the poll’s respondents said they would be willing to engage in sex with an android — that is, a robot designed to look and act human — while 41 percent thought the whole idea was “creepy.” At the same time, 14 percent said that robot-human sex should be prohibited.

“It seems to have got to the stage where people would rather have sex with something that knows exactly what it’s doing, where we know exactly how it will react, and how long it will take, and how good it will be,” said one respondent interviewed, schoolteacher Anna Hughes, pondering the idea of sex with robots. “But this obliterates the excitement of the uncertainty of being with a living person and the risk of it all going wrong, which is big part of having sex with someone in the first place.”
