The Beastie Boys are one of the most notable and prominent hip-hop groups from the 80s. In fact, The Beastie Boys released their debut album Licensed to Ill in 1986, and Last.FM.com reports that “it is the first rap LP to top the Billboard 200 chart.” Not to mention that it spiked all the way to number two on the Top Hip Hop/R&B Albums chart. The Beastie Boys’ LP has sold over five million copies, and is still Columbia Records’ fastest-selling debut album ever. That is quite a feat for The Beastie Boys.

It’s no wonder that The Beastie Boys continue to be idolized and not only loved by their older fans from the 80s, but are still acquiring new fans from all generations. However, fans were extremely saddened on May 4, 2012, when Beastie Boy Adam “MCA” Yauch lost his battle with salivary gland cancer. Now, every year Beastie Boys fans gather in New York to celebrate MCA Day: Celebrating The Life Of Adam Yauch. It is a day to pay tribute to Beastie Boys’ Yauch for his contributions as an artist and humanitarian. The event asks folks to wear their favorite Beastie Boy shirt and enjoy music, art, and friends for the free event.

One surprise that blew people away was a group of 4 young men, Bobby Selby, Jaehyuk Choi, Christopher Groelle, and Stephen Cho, who dressed as Buddhist Monks and performed an incredible breakdance routine in honor of The Beastie Boys and Yauch.

They dressed as monks because Beastie Boy Yauch was a Buddhist and was an activist dedicated to Tibetan independence. This performance is one that will be remembered for a long time, and it is certain that The Beastie Boys and Adam “MCA” Yauch would have been proud of.
