Oculus Rift Games: VR Company Wants What?

Oculus Rift games could be the wave of the future, and it appears that Oculus VR could have some unique plans. Apparently the merger of the company with Facebook is giving them ideas that could make the social media site take over even more of your life. You already chat and post random findings on everybody’s wall, but what if you could poke them in virtual reality?

It appears that Oculus VR wants to create a virtual Facebook environment. The idea is currently known as a Facebook MMO and could support everybody on the social network. Not even Grand Theft Auto 5 was capable of that kind of interactivity from the start as the developers literally scrambled to grab enough servers to handle all of their consumers. Facebook has a few times as many users, and the VR headset creators are looking to incorporate everybody.

You already log into other websites using Facebook, something that’s already in the process of being made anonymous, and now you might end up playing Oculus Rift games with all of your actual Facebook friends. Of course, if the games tend to annoy you, you might just hang out in a virtual environment and simply talk with avatars.

The proposed plan is said to use Facebook‘s already existing network and simply give users an option to use the Oculus Rift for a fully immersive social media experience. This means a Facebook MMO capable of handling over one billion users could be a reality soon.

There is another website which has attempted the same idea, but instead of using a virtual reality headset, they use a 3D virtual world to connect a small handful of avatars. The site is called IMVU and it takes the concept of 3D avatar chatting and combines it with real world money to impress your friends. It requires a separate application running in its own window.

Now we might just see Facebook doing the same thing, except using a VR headset to connect us with other Oculus Rift owners to play games or simply chat. It’s certainly an ambitious idea which could benefit both companies, as long as it stays optional.

If the Oculus VR Facebook MMO becomes a reality, there is also a downside. Users could end up seeing less and less actual personal interaction, and it could affect social lives negatively. We could end up too dependent on Oculus Rift games and lose our sense of reality with other people. Of course, we won’t know until we see it.

What do you think of the idea of a billion person Facebook MMO?
