Rory McIlroy’s Success Secret: Epic Backyard Golf Course

We’ve all heard the old adage, “practice makes perfect,” and while that is true, Rory McIlroy went ahead and kicked it up a notch by building a golfer’s dream course on the property of his Northern Ireland home.

McIlroy, who recently won the US Open Championship and set multiple records in the process, took BBC on a tour of the massive backyard practice facility that he had designed to help keep him ahead of his competitors.

In the BBC documentary, which aired this past Monday in Ireland, 22-year-old Rory shows off his course which has 4 greens, links-style rough, and a replica of the infamous St Andrews Road Hole Bunker, an extremely deep and difficult to play out of bunker on the 17th hole.

While the custom practice course may have cost McIlroy a fortune to construct, he revealed that it was a long term investment that has already proven it is well worth its weight in gold pounds.

“To have a practice facility at the back of my own house is incredible, it was done as an investment in my future,” he said. “Since I got it built I have won my first major, so it has paid for itself already.
