Hannah Montana Was Essentially ‘Choking’ Miley Cyrus, Says Dolly Parton

Hannah Montana was slowly but surely crushing the life out of Miley Cyrus.

The Disney character may have put the “Wrecking Ball” singer on the map, but the show was ultimately taking its toll on Cyrus. According to godmother Dolly Parton, Miley had to bid farewell to the show since it was stifling her creativity.

Although Parton is glad the singer kicked Hannah Montana and the series to the curb, she’s still a little worried about Cyrus’ recent shenanigans. However, the country music legend seems to think her decision to severe ties with Disney was best for her career.

“If I didn’t know how smart and talented Miley is, I might worry about her. She was very proud of the work she did as Hannah Montana, but people were gonna leave her there forever. And she was just smotherin’ and chokin’ in it. So she felt she had to do something completely drastic,” Parton recently wrote in a Time magazine article.

She added, “I’m hoping that now she can relax and show people how talented she really is. ‘Cause the girl can write. The girl can sing. The girl is smart. And she doesn’t have to be so drastic.”

This isn’t the first time the country singer has weighed in about Hannah Montana and Miley Cyrus. The Inquisitr previously reported that Cyrus felt she had to essentially “murder” the character in order to move forward with her music career.

“As a little girl she was great, but then she started to grow up. And people didn’t want her to grow up — they got mad at her. Well, that’s how everyone has been with Miley. One day she’d had enough and told me, ‘I need to murder Hannah Montana in order for people to accept who I really am,'” Parton explained to The Sun last month.

Parton continued, “I think she felt she had to make that severe a change. And she obviously did. I was very worried — I was holding my breath, hoping that people didn’t totally crucify her.”

Miley has certainly proved that she’s capable of making hit records without Hannah Montana and Disney lurking over her shoulder. Billboard recently reported that the post-Hannah Montana album Bangerz recently crossed the one million mark. In short: You probably haven’t heard the last from Cyrus.

What do you think about the singer’s decision to bid farewell to the Disney series Hannah Montana? Do you believe her career is better for it?
