‘The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug’ Blu-Ray/DVD Includes ’24-Hours’ Documentary

The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug Blu-ray/DVD package shows viewers what it is like to be immersed in the production of such a huge blockbuster, and in true Peter Jackson style, he takes us along for the ride.

Anyone who follows the Kiwi director knows that aside from being a master of his craft, the second thing he cares about most, after putting out a quality production, is his fans.

During the long production of his The Hobbit trilogy (which started as two movies, but Jackson quickly decided that he would add a third one; hey, why not?), he has shared multiple video vlogs in which PJ — as he is affectionately known — takes fans on his outings to scout for location and shares plenty of behind-the-scenes goodies with those of us who can’t get enough of that sort of thing.

The exciting two disc edition of The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug, the second in the three part series, is full of the usual stuff Peter Jackson offers; in other words, the very best. In some respects, it seems even better than what was done for Unexpected Journey.

Jackson’s decision to use 48-frames-per-seconds (fps), as opposed to the standard film speed of 24 fps, didn’t go over well with critics or with many of the fans that flocked to theaters to see the much anticipated J.R.R. Tolkien adaptation. However, The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug Blu-ray/DVD is as sharp as any movie you will see.

The “Peter Jackson Invites You To The Set” piece for The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug Blu-ray/DVD is a short documentary type of bonus feature, with even more footage than was already shared by Jackson during the long production in New Zealand. The production diaries, as PJ calls them, are also included in the bonus material that comes with the set.

The special documentary is divided into two parts. Although not exactly a chronological account of what happens during a day in the production of the epic film, Jackson includes as many different cast members and shots as possible.

The package also contains schedules of different crew members such as drivers, make-up artists, costume designers, and personal moments like cast members’ birthday celebrations.

The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug 24-hour special is a close-up account of what it takes to make a production of this magnitude come to life, and certainly reveals all the blood, sweat, and tears the cast and crew put into their work.
