Transformers Dark Of The Moon Takes Top 4th of July Box Office Spot

Transformers Dark of the Moon didn’t take in the type of box office gold seen with the first two movies in the series but the third offering still managed the best box office opening of 2011 with $97.4 million domestically, beating out Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides which took in $90.2 million earlier in the year.

The movie, which officially opened on Tuesday has taken in $162 million domestically, a drop from $200.1 million during the first five days of Revenge of the Fallen.”

Paramount Pictures is estimating a total take through the fourth of July totaling $180.9 million, while the movie internationally has already added $210 million for a total of $372 million to date.

In comparison 2009’s “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” took in $109 million during the first weekend of release and it beat out Spider-Man 2 which in 2004 set a 4th of July record at $88.2 million.

As previously reported the movie also opened to more IMAX screens than any other movie previously offered on the large format screens and broke that record with $22.5 million globally, the first time an IMAX movie has open over the $20 million mark.
