Wii U’s first Zelda title may not look like the tech demo

When Nintendo showed off the graphics capability of the Wii U back at E3, one of the best displays – at least in my opinion – was the Zelda HD tech demo. As gorgeous as it was, you shouldn’t get your hopes up that the first Zelda game on the Wii U will look anything like that.

In an interview with Wired, The Legend of Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma pointed out that when the GameCube was first revealed, the tech demo showed a realistic take on Zelda which was obviously not the route they ended up going with The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker.

“You probably remember that when we introduced the GameCube, we showed a somewhat realistic Zelda demo,” Aonuma said. “And what we actually created was the cel-shaded Wind Waker. So when we show a graphic demo, people think, ‘Oh, this is what the next Zelda will look like,’ but that’s not necessarily the case,”

That doesn’t rule out the possibility, of course, but it’s not likely we’ll be finding out for sure anytime in the near future. After all, the team still has to finish getting The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword out the door.
