When This Grandpa With Alzheimer’s Sees The Family Dog, A Small Miracle Happens

Alzheimer’s, as many of us who have known or lived with someone afflicted by the disease, can be one of the most heartbreaking conditions that exists. It can cause a loved one to seemingly disappear before your eyes, unable to recall the most basic facts of daily life.

But sometimes, a beautiful moment can shine through even this terrible disease.

Lisa Abeyta’s father suffers from Alzheimer’s and has almost completely lost his ability to speak and communicate. But what happens in this video that she posted to YouTube Thursday will both break your heart, and make it sing. Not only does it reveal a moment of hope, Lisa’s video also shows the miraculous power of animals.

Abeyta says in just the 24 hours since she posted that video of her dad speaking beautifully to the family pet, she has been overwhelmed by the reaction she’s received. Not only has the video been viewed almost 90,000 times in about 24 hours, she has received offers from “several agencies reach(ing) out asking to help me monetize the video.”

But the a moment like the one is this video is not for sale.

“I created it with my teenage son to commemorate a beautiful moment with my father so that I could share it with my mom and family,” she said. “I shared it here in case anyone might resonate with the experience. I am so very glad it has done that for so many of you.”

About 5.2 million Americans currently live with Alzheimer’s. About 200,000 are under the age of 65. More than half-a-million seniors pass away each year from causes related to the disease. Lisa Abeyta’s video reminds us to appreciate our loved ones in every little moment.
