Dallas Cowboys Rumors: Team Could Take Johnny Manziel, Leaving Tony Romo Out

Dallas Cowboys rumors are circulating in the days before the NFL draft, with reports that the team is ready to take controversial quarterback Johnny Manziel if he were to slip down the board in the first round.

The team’s owner Jerry Jones has been open about his love of the Texas A&M product and ESPN is now reporting that the Cowboys would be ready to snatch up Manziel if he fell to them at the No. 16 overall pick. Jones is reportedly so enamored with Manziel that he was raving about him in front of Romo.

The Dallas Cowboys rumors may not amount to much. Manziel has been predicted everywhere from the No. 1 overall pick to out of the first round entirely, but it seems likely that with the number of teams at the top of the draft looking for a quarterback that Manziel wouldn’t last long.

Manziel has drawn plenty of interest across the league, with rumors that the Cleveland Browns are very interested. He has also been hosted by a number of other teams, including the New England Patriots.

Some would still see drafting Manziel as a gamble, even at No. 16. Many analysts have seen him as a bust, including ESPN’s Merril Hoge.

“Johnny Manziel’s skill set does not transition to the NFL, and drafting him high is a big, big risk,” Hoge said. “I see bust written all over him. Especially if he’s drafted in the first round.”

But if Manziel were to drop, the Cowboys appear ready to take him.

The Dallas Cowboys draft rumors could mean the end of Tony Romo’s days with the team, even though he recently signed a $119.5 million contract extension. Though that’s some big money to swallow, with Romo turning 34 this week and coming off surgery for a herniated disk, it could be in the team’s interest to go in a new direction.
